WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT PATANG
"The storytelling is effortlessly made part of the hypnotically beautiful visuals, and woven into a kaledioscope of colors, faces, music and a little romance. Bhargava is masterful in the way he allows his story to emerge from his mosaic, instead of spelling it out by the numbers. Evokes the old and new Indias side by side as well as I've seen done." - Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times
Bhargava knows when to stop and catch the right, fleeting expressions and gestures. Theres a gentleness in this snapshot of a family and all its baggage that seems almost effortless. - The Hollywood Reporter
Prashant Bhargava has a sure hand with his actors, immeasurably enhanced by Biswas' motherly presence whose underlying bittersweetness is salved by a palpable warmth of heart. - Variety
"An unexpected, warm and engaging masterpiece. Outstanding camera work - precisely how I shoot my own films!" - Michael Nyman, composer (Gattaca, The Piano) & filmmaker
ABOUT PATANG
Patang is a new feature length film by award winning writer/director, Prashant Bhargava.
Every year a million kites fill the skies above Ahmedabad-dueling, soaring, tumbling and flying high. When a successful Delhi businessman takes his daughter on a surprise trip back to his childhood home for the festival, an entire family has to confront its own fractured past and fragile dreams. Music and fireworks, food and laughter, a kaleidoscope of color and light, the magic of the kite flying high - a traditional recipe of healing and renewal. With naturalistic performances from actors and non-actors alike, bold, lyrical editing, vibrant cinematography and a kinetic score, Patang delights the senses and nourishes the spirit.
Produced by Jaideep Punjabi and Executive Produced by Vijay Bhargava and Jaideep Punjabi. Written, Directed and Edited by Prashant Bhargava.
JOURNEY TO DATE
The seeds for the movie Patang were planted in 2005, when director Prashant Bhargava traveled to Ahmedabad to experience the city's annual kite festival.
Inspired by the spiritual energy of the festival, he returned the next three years, documenting his experiences with over a hundred hours of video footage. Slowly immersing himself in the ways of the old city, he became acquainted with its unwritten codes of conduct, its rhythms and secrets. Prashant would sit on a street corner for hours at a stretch and just observe. Over time, he connected with shopkeepers and street kids, gangsters and grandmothers. This process formed the foundation for developing the characters and story.
PATANG has been invited to screen at leading film festivals worldwide including:
Berlin Film Festival - FORUM Program (World Premiere), Tribeca Film Festival - In Competition (North American Premiere), Granada Film Festival (Opening Night Film), Jerusalem Film Festival, Milano International Film Festival, Monterrey International Film Festival (In Competition), Vancouver International Film Festival, Mill Valley International Film Festival, Chicago International Film Festival, DC APA Film Festival, Philadelphia International Film Festival, Starz Denver Film Festival, Stockholm International Film Festival, Cinema Tous Ecrans (Geneva)

Read legendary critic Roger Ebert's review
"This film is joyous, but more than that: It's lovely in its construction. The director, Prashant Bhargava, born and raised in Chicago, knows what his basic story line is, but reveals it subtly... There is nothing simple about 'Patang.'" - Roger Ebert

OUR MISSION
"This film has been made by sheer love and will. It is a film about the pride of a community, made by the community. It is anthem of Ahmedabad. We chose not to focus the camera on the tragedies of the past. In a world that is continually being ravaged by conflict and upheaval, PATANG has the power to inspire, change and remind us of magic of happiness. Join the movement to ensure this film gets released." - Prashant Bhargava, Director
Patang premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. Our North American premiere followed in the World Narrative Competition at the Tribeca Film Festival. We have been moved by the reception of audiences. Sold out shows. Great Q & A's. People from all walks of life have championed the film as an intimate drama that evokes their own stories of family, love and friendship.
Distirbutors have applauded director Prashant Bhargava's vision but have failed to step up and release the film. As filmmakers we choose to take our destiny in our own hands. We are chartering a path to take the film directly to audiences.
The city of Ahmedabad has endured recent natural disaster and a history of communal violence between Hindus and Muslims. To outsiders, catastrophe and hardship has defined the identity of the city. But life goes on. People laugh, go to work and fall in love. PATANG is an anthem of Ahmedabad. PATANG is one of the first films to present the joy, pride and spirit of celebration of the city and its people.
Renowned author Shashi Tharoor writes Cinema is Indias most successful brand ambassador. PATANG is a film that reshapes the perception of India to global audiences. The film pushes the boundaries of Indian cinema beyond the stereotypes of slumdogs and millionaires.
