Give Japanese children a chance to express what they feel and think after the nuclear disaster. Support them telling and sharing their stories, experiences, and opinions on TV!
Our Story
Even at this moment, every hour, 2 hundred million bq. of radioactive substances are continuously being emitted from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. There are more than 300.000 children living in areas with the same level of radioactive pollution as in the evacuation zone of Chernobyl. The radioactive substance, which are supposed to be confined, have now spread across the entire country through ashes, rubble and food. With the children being vulnerable to dangerous radiation, what is their opinion about the current situation?
The
ongoing program ContAct aired at
Cabel-TV Asahi New Star, will appear as a special 2hour program. This program will be aired sometime early in
January 2012. Ourplanet-TV wants to produce a program focusing on children and various citizens, who will be
participating in the broadcast. The feature will include students
from elementary to high school, who are living in Fukushima and the
Kantou region (Northeastern Japan) as well.
The
students will be collecting their own data regarding nuclear
radiation from researchers and nuclear power plants. In 5 to 10
years from now, what will the causes of the damaging radiation be?
And what will happen to nuclear energy policies?
The
children will be questioning their own future. Ourplanet-TV is going to make the first Japanese public access program from the
perspective of the children.
Background
Even after the tragic accident on March 11th, at the Fukushima nuclear power plant the government and TEPCO continued to underestimate and underreport the severity of the accident and the potential effects on the surrounding population. The media followed this lead by not questioning the information they were getting from the government and TEPCO and simply passed along what they were being told, always telling the best case scenario. In the last 6 months Ourplanet-TV has been covering the whole incident and given transparent information about the incident as opposed to the mass media. For parents living close to the nuclear incidents epicenter, it has been crucial for them to have access to objective information regarding the disastrous situation.
The program will focus on the Japanese children, who has been affected by the Fukushima nuclear incident. These children are exposed to radioactivity everyday and has their everyday life centered around this incident. The children's parents are struggling to get their children evacuated to a place were they are less exposed to radioactivity. The case has been taken to a court, but still more than a half year later nothing has changed. The children living close to the epicenter of the nuclear plant still cannot play in the school yards and outside their houses without being exposed to radiation.
The Impact
By giving a donation to the program, we will be able to broadcast a program that documents the children's daily life and how they have been affected by the nuclear incident. We would like to give them a chance to express what they feel and what they think and tell their stories, experiences, and opinions to the society.
