Maman? Non merci? (Translation: Being a mom? No thanks!) is a feature-length documentary film about Western women who have made the conscious decision of not having any kids. Who are they? Normal or alien? How does our society see them? Shot in Quebec, France and Belgium, it explores the reality of several women in their 30s... (and some in their 70s) and goes even further than that by questioning what femininity and being a woman actually means. 

Though shot in French, the final version will have English subtitles :)

Maman? Non merci! est un documentaire long mtrage propos des femmes occidentales qui font le choix volontaire de ne pas vouloir d'enfant. Qui sont-elles? Normales ou extra-terrestres? Comment la socit les peroit-elle? Tourn au Qubec, en France et en Belgique, ce film explore la ralit de plusieurs femmes trentenaires (et de quelques septagnaires!) et dpasse mme ce propos pour aller plus loin et questionner ce qu'est tre une femme et la fminit.

The Impact of the film / L'impact du film

It's very crucial to make such a film in 2011 because... we're in 2011 and people still "expect" women to go through the "necessary" phase of motherhood. Women are often criticized and judged for making alternative choices. I believe this film is necessary to show these women as neither crazy nor revolutionaries. Just as simple women who have made different life choices than most. Also, there has never been a French-language film on that subject. I want to open a debate with this and make people talk about a subject rarely broached: women who don't want to procreate. About 20% of women in Quebec will make this choice. It's time they have a voice.

Il est crucial de faire ce film en 2011... parce que nous sommes en 2011 et que les gens s'attendent encore ce que les femmes passent pas l'tape "obligatoire" de la maternit. Les femmes sont souvent juges et critiques lorsqu'elles font des choix de vie alternatifs. Je crois que ce film est ncessaire afin de montrer des femmes qui ne sont ni folles, ni rvolutionnaires. Simplement des femmes qui ont fait des choix diffrent de la majorit. De plus, il n'y a jamais eu de film francophone sur ce sujet. Je tiens ouvrir le dbat et que les gens parlent de ce sujet qui reste un tabou: les femmes qui ne veulent pas procrer. peu prs 20% des femmes qubcoises font ce choix: n'est-il pas le temps de leur donner une voix?

What We Need & What You Get / Ce dont j'ai besoin et ce que vous obtiendrez

The money I need at this point is for the PRODUCTION of the documentary, in other words: equipment rentals, cost for car rental + gas, food for the production team and money to pay my sound person and my cameraman. (I do not expect any salary as this is my project, my "baby" if you will and I do this out of sheer passion!)

Breakdown:

The sound person will be paid $2,000 for 4 months of work
The cameraman (only needed on a few shoots as I will do most of the filming) will be paid $1,000

Food for 4 people (sound person, cameraman, director: me, and character) for 10 shoots: $500

Gas and car rentals for 10 shoots : $250

Equipment rental (only sound equipment, as I have the rest): $250

Extras for one shoot (10 extras x $50): $500

Studio rentals for 2 shoots: $500

Total: $5,000

What I ask if that you buy the DVD in advance for only $25. That way instead of waiting for the film to be finished to buy it, you help me have the means to DO IT now. Look at the perks I'm offering for any kind of donation of $25 and more. That being said, you can pledge LESS than $25 as well and help contribute what you can.

L'argent recueilli ce moment-ci est pour la PRODUCTION du documentaire, en d'autres mots: location d'quipement, location de voiture + essence, bouffe pour l'quipe lors des tournages, et argent pour payer mon quipe. Je ne me paierai aucun salaire puisque ce projet est mon "bb" et je le fais par pure passion!

Mon budget:

Le ou la preneur(e) de son sera pay 2 000$ pour 4 mois de travail.
Le ou la camraman (sur seulement quelques tournages, puisque je filmerai l'essentiel des scnes moi-mme) sera pay 1 000$.

Nourriture pour 4 (preneur de son, camraman, ralisatrice: moi, personnage) pour 10 tournages: 500$

Essence et location de voiture (pour 10 tournages): 250$

Location d'quipement (seulement pour le son, je possde le reste): 250$

Figurants pour un tournage (10 figurants 50$ chacun): 500$

Deux locations de studio pour tournages: 500$
Total: 5 000$

J'espre que vous achterez le DVD ds maintenant, soit d'avance, pour seulement 25$. Ainsi au lieu d'attendre que le film soit complt pour acheter le DVD, en l'achtant maintenant vous me permettez de TOURNER le film ds maintenant.
