The Story:
After walking for days, a band of travelers stumble upon a small village in the mountains. There they are greeted by the mayor and are told that there was no food or lodging available due to the depression the country was in.
The band of travelers replied that they understood and couldn’t think of asking for anything of the village with the state they were in. The travelers would simply set camp by the stream outside of the village for the night and move on the next morning.
The travelers set up camp, filled a pot with water from the stream and drop a stone in it. After a while a villager stopped by and asked what the travelers were doing. They said making “Stone Soup” but that they were unfortunately missing potatoes and Stone Soup was really not the same with potatoes. The villager remembered that he happen to have some potatoes and gladly offered them if he could share in the amazing Stone Soup. Over hearing the conversation another villager offered his carrots to the meal if he, as well, could share in the feast. The Travelers said that they would love to share the Stone Soup with whoever was hungry. Slowly villagers came out of their homes and each offered a little of what they had: mutton, corn, barley, peas, cabbage, etc. Soon the whole village had gathered by the stream for the delicious Stone Soup; that everyone had made.
Who We Are:
Founded by local actors and directors the mission of The Stone Soup Theatre Project is to offer theatre to the communities of Northeast Chicago. Through exposure to quality productions and educational outreach we plan to make theatre something that the community gathers over. Members of the company focus on bringing theatre workshops into local schools, providing summer classes, and creating productions that make people laugh, cry, and think. The core belief that theatre provides the elements needed to create a community is what drives the work done. By enlisting the help of community organizations and local businesses’ The Stone Soup Theatre Project provides productions and educational workshops at little to no cost to patrons. With everyone in the community offering just a little of what they can; theatre can be created, taught, and enjoyed by all.
