Short Films in Iceland

Coventry University in collaboration with Gryla Productions are producing three short films in Iceland and need your help to do so!

Introduction  Coventry University are pushing the boundaries of student film production and are travelling to Iceland on 24th February to produce three short films with the potential to be shown at the degree show at BAFTA in june: Outdated, Snowblind and Pall. The pre-production process for the films began in November and has been ongoing since. Over 25 students are participating in the projects, all of which have specific roles in each team. The three films will be shot in and around Iceland's capital and involve Icelandic actors and actresses. Short films in Iceland have never been produced by the University before and a project that is truly unique and a once in a lifetime opportunity. The conditions are cold and the time limit is precise, so everyone involved has been deeply involved from the start and aware of exactly what is required of them out there.

Snowblind

A psychological thriller set on a desolate, icy road in Iceland. A young female struggles to come to terms with her disaterous mistake. She chooses to hide her dark secret, but is haunted by the memory of what she has done. In short we follow Elin, a depressed alcoholic with a past unknown to us. But there is someone else who knows her secret, and wants revenge…

Outdated

Two young adults - Thomas and Asdis - meet for the first time. They immediately get on like a house on fire; Thomas promises to show her something later on and we soon follow them on a romantic day around Iceland, involving ice skating. Everything is going well until suddenly Asdis stops and starts coughing up blood. With a quick exit and no explanation we then see them climbing a hill, at the top of which is the Northern Lights! They have a romantic but subtle experience, leaving behind a small cross made out of stones and a photograph of themselves. They then go back to a hotel room where is is revealed that they are both dying and have met to end their lives with each other. When morning comes we see the two lying in bed, embracing each other, but no longer breathing.

Cats in Reykjavik

'Cats' is the story of an eight year old Icelandic boy who lives with his terminally ill mother and alcoholic father in the 101 area of Reykjavik. Pall has only ever known life in a dysfunctional family and invents a fantasy world in order to escape. He has always been fascinated by the cats that roam around the streets of Reykjavik and this obsession plays a vital role in his dream world. It is an endearing and subtle tale told through film and animation which encapsulates the essence of Iceland through a young boy's eyes.

Where will your money go?

Your money contributed here will go towards the hire of actors and actresses on location in Iceland. This will cover their travel to locations, pay rate and catering.

What are the perks?

You will be able to get your name in our credits, on the website, as well as at the end of our films. You will receive a thank you video from the producers and directors of all three films and should we reach our budget, be invited to BAFTA where the films are likely to be shown. So far we have raised £3000 out of a budget of £4000 so we need your help to get the last of it! Our priorities are on actors/actresses, locations and equipment hire. The flights and accommodation have already been paid for by ourselves, but your money will also help fund our travel to locations when we are out there. We have raised the £3000 so far by sponsored walks, swims, nightlife events, cake sales and more, but this is the final push! 

What if we don't raise the full amount? 

If we can't raise the full amount for our campaign it will have a dramatic effect on the outcome. We will have to take money from other areas of our production, such as locations and kit, which will result in a final product that is not as good as what it could be. 

With your help this can be done! Every little helps, so even if it is just $5 (£3) you will know that your money has gone into helping some young film-makers start their careers in film production and produce some amazing short films!

We shall be posting our project outline video shortly, involving interviews with the crew and going over what we have so far in the production folders... so keep updated!
