Who are we? Our story...
Stories of
Substance uses drama, humor and music in a creative, powerful, and
efficient way to educate students about making healthy choices. It raises
awareness about vital information, and a strong connection is forged with the
emotions behind substance use, domestic violence, sexual conduct, bullying, self-esteem, depression, and internet safety.
The
performance is written and performed by young adults and is developed from
actual stories. The cast - peer educators, take
the real stories and develop an interactive and engaging performance. The
audience can feel and learn. Some of the actors have experienced the scenes
they are portraying. The cast share their experience through the scenes as well
as in the talk back discussion after each performance, reaching their peers in
a very powerful way.
The Impact
Stories of substance (SOS) is all about real stories, real people. Using theatre as an educational
tool is not a new concept, but we take it a step further by combining three
powerful tools: theatre, peer education
and real stories. Theatre is chosen as a medium for learning because it allows
an audience to respond on a feeling level. We want our audience to
"feel" the information before they think "that will not happen
to me'.
Many times, students come up to the cast after shows to relate to a scene they saw on stage, or share with us their own, personal story. Other times, they will reach out to us online. Whichever way they do, our goal is to help them, "stop and think" about the choices they have made and continue to make.
What We Need & What You Get
We hope that through this campaign, we will be able to expand our reach to schools in the NYC metropolitan area. Unfortunately, we cannot afford to do that on our own. That is why we are turning to IndieGoGo to help us donate a show to the high school seniors of NYC.We feel that this show will help students prepare themselves for life
issues, especially topics containing issues they might encounter in college.
