Our Story
My name is John Yingling. If you go to shows in Chicago, you've probably already seen me.
After spending the better part of seven years in the Green Bay, WI punk rock scene, falling in love with shows because of venues like Concert Cafe and DIY spaces like The ______ House, I moved to Chicago. Really for one reason : to be immersed in the Chicago music scene that I love so dearly. What I found when I got here was a community of selfless, motivated people who just wanted to create an environment where music can be heard.
Chicago continues to blow me away the longer I'm here. It's made up of the most passionate individuals, businesses, and bands that look out for one another. They let strangers into their homes, for free. They bring bands from all over the world into their basements, warehouses, and living spaces. Community is a major aspect of why I love this city so much. Our venues, bands, people, and spaces have shown huge support for this cause, or I wouldn't have launched it.
The Impact
What We Need
Cameras! Microphones! Editing equipment! Currently using a broken computer that shuts off every 30 minutes, and cannot encode a video above 300MB. Cameras that have literally been through what some would consider certain rings of hell. All donations, along with my own money, will go to edit all current footage, and you'll also be able to see your donation, whenever you'd like, through the future content on my site. This will provide a base to build off of as well.
IF IT SUCCEEDS?
- ALL DONATIONS ABOVE THE GOAL, $3,500, WILL GO TO CHIRP RADIO.
-and-
We'll throw A FREE SHOW for donors in the early summer!!! Some spectacular people and bands are donating their time to help. The line-up so far?
Tyler Jon Tyler! (Touring the East Coast starting April 27th!)
Close Hits! (Amazing new band from the current members of Snacks!)
Magic Milk! (they did the song in the video's background!)
A few notes on the perks :
$100 / $200 levels : June. July. August. Pick your favorite band! The Hideout, Lincoln Hall, Schubas, and Reggie's Rock Club have been amazing enough to agree to my shenanigans of photo shoots and filming. Band must agree! If you are IN a band and want these things done for a collective donation of your choosing, please reach out! edit : Will do other events, too! Reach out!
EDIT : I received an e-mail asking if I will film other shows and events. The answer is YES, absolutely! However, please make sure the band / venue / whoever are okay with this!
$500 : The reason it's so high is because I will have trouble tearfully parting with this for anything less than a significant chunk off of this goal, and for CHIRP. Walkmen record is in good condition. Sleeve has minor stains / chunks of fruit from David Letterman's desk, which infinitely adds to it's charm. Along with this record, you will receive a hand-written setlist, and a DVD of the footage I shot of the Walkmen playing at Schubas last year! I won the record from CoS with a story about food poisoning at Showbiz Pizza. If you have inquiries or would like photos : hotmetaldobermans@gmail.com
$1000 : If you'd like to donate $1000 to this campaign, you have my undivided attention. Want an event photographed or filmed? Done. Want me to record your band playing in your practice space? You got it. You name it, really! No funny stuff...

About CHIRP Radio
CHIRP Radio hosts curate their own shows within certain guidelines, playing an eclectic mix of independent and under-heard music from an array of genres and eras. Listeners are encouraged to make requests and generally interact with CHIRP Radio hosts via comment, IM, or phone.
For now, CHIRP Radio is a web-only outlet, but the Chicago Independent Radio Project is working to change the law at the federal level to open up new licenses in urban areas, and hopes one day to be able to apply for a low-power FM broadcast license as well. To find out more about this work, visit chicagoindieradio.org.
CHIRP Radio does not air commercials, and receives no funding from corporations or the federal government. It is supported by special event revenues, small grants, and listeners like you."
Some of my favorite music venues below have been overly gracious, being selfless enough to let me into their places of business with cameras to help with this :
Threadless is a community and art oriented t-shirt company based in Chicago, IL
My film, photography, and words have appeared many places. If you would like to view more, you can do so at :
...the Handsome Furs video and interview I spoke of can be viewed here , and because of the amount of new material played, will get a full-show treatment after they release their to-be-amazing new record, "Sound Kapital" on Subpop June 28th!
Thank you, so much, for taking the time to look at this. I realize there is a lot going on the world, and it means everything to me that you chose to spend your time here. If you have any inquiries, or would just like to drop me a line instead of donating, please reach out.
