The Freedom Education Project
In school, you probably learned that Abraham Lincoln ended slavery in 1863.
WRONG.
Like others, Lincoln outlawed slavery, but that didn't prevent slavery from existing. There are an estimated 27 MILLION SLAVES in the world today. That's more than ANY OTHER TIME in history.
That's why Free the Slaves is starting the Freedom Education Project - a way to educate students, parents, and the public about modern-day slavery while actually helping free slaves in other parts of the world.
By donating 'Slavery: The Book' to 27 public schools and libraries in California, we are re-educating the public- and the next generation- that slavery still exists. And, we are showing that slavery can be eradicated.
100% of the proceeds from the book will go towards freeing an entire village in India from slavery.
What is Slavery?
Someone is enslaved when they are forced to work against their will, under threat of violence, and cannot walk away. It is everywhere. Slaves are often hidden in plain sight, working in restaurants, factories, private homes, and brothels.
Free the Slaves
We are an internationally-recognized leader in the new anti-slavery movement. We work in hotspots around the world, including Ghana, Haiti, Nepal, Brazil and India to liberate slaves around the world and help survivors of slavery rebuild their lives. We research real world solutions to eradicate slavery forever, and fight the systems that allow slavery to exist in the first place. We use world class research and compelling stories from the frontlines of slavery to convince the powerful and the powerless that slavery can end. We are a non-profit organization made up of people who don't want to live in a world with slavery. And we're willing to do something about it.
Slavery: The Book
'Slavery' is a groundbreaking book of photography by Free the Slaves and Lisa Kristine. It features a foreword by Free the Slaves International Advisor Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and text by Free the Slaves co-founders Kevin Bales, Jolene Smith and Peggy Callahan.
'Slavery' shows the resilience and strength of people on the frontlines of modern-day slavery-the men, women and children still in slavery, and those who have broken free.
As Father Desmond Tutu writes in the foreword:
"The photos within this book make it impossible to fool ourselves. We are not so different. We all want lives of dignity. We all want our children to be safe and to thrive. Look at the faces in Lisa Kristine's photographs... we can see our own dreams and desires in the lives of those gracing these pages."
Why We Need Your Help!
We want you to join the new anti-slavery movement. By donating to this special campaign, you can help create the next generation of abolitionists while helping to liberate people from slavery.
Slavery can end in our lifetime. Everyone has a role to play.
Your funds will purchase 27 'Slavery' books to be placed in schools and libraries in California, along with a multi-media, educational info-pack on modern-day slavery.
100% of the proceeds will go into our Free a Village, Build a Movement initiative, which empowers entire villages to come to freedom. Help us raise $2,700 in honor of the 27 million people enslaved today.
