Our Story

 

First Words is a short film, produced through the Atlantic Filmmaker's Co-Operative's (AFCOOP) Film 5 program.

 

It's the story of a bilingual couple, anxiously waiting to hear their son's first word. Will it be en français, with a happy "Papa?" Or in english, with a soft "Mommy?" When little Mateo decides it's time to drop the bomb, he creates a huge fuss, all over one little word.

 

We have come to Indie Gogo not to raise funds for the making of our film, but rather for its distribution and promotion. Making a film is expensive enough, but promoting it isn't exactly cheap. We are looking for funds to go towards the making of screener DVDs and master tapes to send out to film festivals. Any funds received will also be used for promotional costs, including, but not limited to the costs of creation and printing of posters, as well as the numerous costs that come from shipping all of these things to film festivals around the world.

 

Who We Are

 

Fabien Melanson and Simon Thibault are the director and producer of this project. First Words is our first project together, but will not be our last.

 

Fabien Melanson juggles three careers : editing, acting and fatherhood.  Over the past decade he's worked in film, television, news, corporate communications, public relations, radio and theatre.  Currently, Fabien is one of the core editors at Arcadia Entertainment where he cuts original HD programming for Canada and abroad.  Now in his early thirties he is focusing on his own projects.  Fabien is Acadian and originally from Cap-Pelé, New Brunswick. His first word was "Maman".

When Simon Thibault was four years old, he told his mother he spoke three languages: English, French and Acadian. He grew up in Pointe-de-l'Église, Nova Scotia. Although surrounded by the french language his whole life, he had to take french grammar classes. This was a wake-up call.  He met writer/director Fabien Melanson through a mutual friend. Upon reading "First Words", he recognized a tale that needed to be heeded. He currently works as a freelance journalist and writer. His first word was "Non."

 

The Impact

 

Although our film focuses on the issue of language - the film is in both English and French - the issue in our film happens everywhere.  You could substitute English and French with any other language, religion or culture.  What happens when two people who come from two different languages/backgrounds/religions/etc. get married and have kids? Which is more important? And what kind of impact does it have on family dynamics?

 

Both the director and producer deal with this question on a daily basis.  As francophones living in a predominantly anglophone city, they often wonder what will happen to their language, their heritage and their culture.  But this happens to people of all cultures, languages, ideologies, etc.

We want to cast the light of what is happening in our neck of the woods (Atlantic Canada, french-speaking Canada) as well as in other communities around the country and the world. First Words is a sneak-peek into that world.

 

What We Need & What You Get

 

What we need isn't much.  $900 dollars.  That gives us the funds to make the copies of the film that we need to make, as well as work on promoting our film and getting it out there.  The main funds in the creation of this film came from a program called Film 5 through the Atlantic Filmmakers Co-op.   We have made a film that we are proud of and believe in.

 

And so do film festivals.  We recently got into our first Film Festival, the Atlantic Film Festival. The film is being shown in two screenings during the fest, which you can check out here.  The film is also set to be screened at the Silver Wave Film Festival as well as the FICFA (International Francophone Film Festival in Acadie).

Premiers Mots est un court-métrage réalisé et produit par Film 5, un programme du Atlantic Filmmaker�s Co-Op.

 

Premiers Mots raconte l'histoire d'un couple bilingue qui attend avec impatience le premier mot de leur fils. En effet, ce mot sera-t-il, "Papa?" en français... ou bien le fameux, "Mommy" en anglais?  Or, lorsque Matéo s'exprime enfin pour la première fois, voilà que la guerre des mots commence.

 

Ayant entièrement assumé la production de la création de Premiers Mots, nous faisons appel aujourd'hui à Indie Gogo pour nous aider dans sa distribution et sa promotion. En effet nous avons besoin de soutients pour tout ce qui concerne les frais associés à la promotion d'un film que nous soumettons aux maximums de festivals nationaux et internationaux - plus précisément: les affiches à imprimer pour la promotion du film, la fabrication de DVD et de copies maîtresses à envoyer a chaque directeur de festival.

 

Qui sommes-nous?

 

Fabien Melanson et Simon Thibault sont respectivement le réalisateur et le producteur de ce projet. Premiers mots est leur premier projet ensemble et certainement pas le dernier.

 

Fabien Melanson jongle trois carrières: monteur, comédien et Papa! Au cours des dix dernières années, il a travaillé dans le cinéma, la télévision, les nouvelles, les relations publiques, la radio et le théâtre. En plus d'une carrière en montage d'émissions de télévision à Arcadia Entertainment, Fabien,  aujourd'hui dans sa trentaine, se concentre sur ses propres projets. Acadien, originaire du Cap-Pelé au Nouveau-Brunswick, son premier mot a été "Maman."

 

Quand Simon Thibault avait quatre ans, lui, racontait à sa mère qu'il parlait trois langues: anglais, français et acadien. Il a grandi à Pointe-de-l'Église en Nouvelle-Écosse. Bien entouré par la langue française toute sa vie, il a dû prendre des cours de grammaire française lors de sa rentrée à l'université. Ce fut un réveil. Simon a rencontré Fabien par un ami commun. À la lecture de Premier Mots  il a tout de suite reconnu une histoire importante qui se devait d'être entendue. Simon travaille comme journaliste indépendant et écrivain. Son premier mot a été, "Non."

 

L'impact.

 

Bien que notre film semble se concentrer uniquement sur la question de la langue, la réelle question de notre film se pose partout. On peut remplacer l'anglais et le français par n'importe quelle langue, voir même une autre religion ou une autre culture. Qu'est-ce qui se passe quand deux personnes qui viennent de deux cultures/religions /langues/etc. se marient et ont des enfants? Qu'est-ce qui va dominer et devenir le plus important? Quels sont les impactes sur la dynamique familiale?

 

Le directeur et producteur de ce film se confrontent à ces questions tous les jours. En tant que francophones vivant dans une ville majoritairement anglophone, ils se demandent souvent ce qui va arriver à leur langue, leur patrimoine et leur culture. Nous voulons jeter la lumière sur notre coin de pays, (le Canada français dans le Canada atlantique!) ainsi que dans les autres communautés à travers le pays et le monde. Premiers mots est un petit regard sur ce monde.

 

Ce que nous cherchons.

 

Une modeste sommes de $1000, pas bien grande mais pour nous cela fait toute la différence. Grâce au programme Film 5 de Atlantic Filmmaker's Co-op, nous avons fait un film de qualité dont nous sommes extrémement fiers. Il nous reste maintenant qu'en faire profiter le maximum de personnes!

 

Nous sommes d'ailleurs très excités car Premiers Mots a récemment été séléctionné au Festival du Film de l'Atlantique de 2011 et sera visionné pendant le festival ici- même, (l'ouverture du festival est le 15 septembre.) Il sera aussi visonné au Festival international du cinéma francophone en Acadie (FICFA) ainsi qu'au Silver Wave Film Festival.
