Our Story

My name is Danielle Mitchell and I have given 8 years of my life to restaurant industry. It's one of those jobs that I took up while I was in school because of its ever forgiving flexible schedule and its appealing, fun, fast paced atmosphere. But as the years went on and I graduated, I had to reevaluate my life and ask myself "why am I still here?" It was a great job, made some good money but I struggled with the fact that I had become stuck, as my enjoyment of serving a plate of food was slowly diminishing. Don't get me wrong I didn't always feel that way. I loved meeting people and developing a relationship with regulars. I was great at putting on that fake smile accompanied by a high pitched welcoming voice. I used to enjoy going to work to spend my time with my crazy second family of fellow employees, (that's what kept me working there for years) but something started sucking the joy out of serving. I felt like something had to be done. The public needed to know about the people that serve their food!

The original web series "Dish It Out" explores the life of five servers and their struggles with working in the restaurant business. Many people think that being a server is a brainless job. This is entirely untrue. It's not as easy as it looks. I mean there are those rude clueless servers out there that had no business being hired but for everyone of those servers there are twenty other great servers out there that enjoy their job and can multitask like crazy to make sure every guest at every table is satisfied.

As a filmmaker, I decided to bring the server voice to life.

The Impact

Myself, joined with Doug Robertson, Marvel Zamora and Karol Hernandez make up Launch One Productions. We developed a the first season of the web series "Dish It Out." We used all of the resources we had to produce an entertaining show on a very low budget. We received great feedback from the restaurant community and from those who are not. Servers would tell us that they had an experienced similar situations to what had happened to the characters on the show. We realized we had something special that could attract a large fan base. As we look to move forward with the series and develop a second season, we realize in order to present the show appropriately we need an suitable budget.

"Dish It Out" is relative to both those working in the restaurant industry and those that are not. As a server you will appreciate the joy and frustrations our servers go through when dealing with incredibly irritating guests and the dysfunctional family of employees. As a guest you will get some insight onto what goes on behind the kitchen doors and the cheesy smile (or frown) that is painted on your server. You'll laugh, think some things are disgusting, be shocked, think "oh no he didn't!", but overall, hopefully you can just appreciate those servers out there that bust there feet running food and drink refills to their tables only to hope for proper monetary rewards.

What We Need

Our hopes for season two involves a new location, expansion of the cast(with uniforms), catering services, equipment, and film festival submissions.
The new location will give us production value. We want our audience to believe that this show is real and takes place in an active restaurant. This will take up a great chunk of our budget as the location is key and often involves expensive permits.
Expanding the cast allows the show to function as a real restaurant and involve all the perspectives from the servers to the hosts and cooks. Part of the budget allocated to this will allow us to cast actors using professional casting. The uniforms are an essential part of the package to convince the audience that the employees are a functional professional unit.
Catering services are important as we expand the cast because our actors need to eat to fuel their superb performance and the show needs real food to serve. (As we have previously tried to use plastic food, not so convincing.)
Using the proper equipment will let us move fluidly in the restaurant as people are always moving and working in the restaurant. We hope to get a camera stabilizer so we can have smooth shots.
We hope to enter the first season of "Dish It Out" in several film festivals this year to get the word out about our show and to entice new followers in anticipation of season two.
Our ideal goal is $10,000. We have no other funding sources as our pockets are cotton mouth dry from the first season. Your donations toward developing our vision is much appreciated and such an important part to making this series come to life.
Check out our first season of "Dish It Out" at our website www.theserverlife.com or on our YouTube channel www.youtube.com/theserverlife to get a taste of what the show is about. We have many great ideas for the second season and hope you can help make it possible! Take a look to see what we have to offer for your generous donation.
