Hey there, I'm David Demchuk. I was born and raised in Winnipeg. Manitoba (brrrr!) and now live in Toronto, Ontario. A playwright, independent filmmaker, screenwriter, essayist, critic and journalist, I've been writing for theatre, film, television, radio and other media for thirty years. Known primarily for my work in Canadian theatre, my plays have been produced in Toronto, New York, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Vancouver, Chicago, San Francisco, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and in London, England.
I'm currently at work on a new project--an arts/culture/communications micro-festival examining police actions during Toronto's 2010 G20 Summit, titled Don't Wear Black, which I'm planning for spring/summer 2011. The project would occur over several days and include photography, video, painting, textile arts, audio work, readings, graffiti and chalk art, a youth presentation, panel discussions and interviews, a musical evening. Plus I'm writing a new theatre piece for the event. We are also organizing a Jane's Walk in May titled 'Don't Wear Black: the G20 Walk of Shame' which will take participants through downtown Toronto to many of the sites where G20 police violence occurred.
