Synopsis
"Caul" is an ambitious fifteen-minute short film based on an old Polish folktale. Set in the mid-seventeenth century, it tells the story of Piotr, born late one night with a caul over his head (what we would now know as the amniotic sac).
This being a terrible omen that your child would become a vampire, the parents must keep the caul, dry it, grind it and feed it to their son, Piotr when he turns seven. This will prevent him from becoming a vampire.
On his seventh birthday, his parents sit Piotr down for a 'special birthday meal'. But he refuses to eat and kicks the food away, ruining it. Now there is nothing to stop him from turning...
"This is not going to be like any of your weak kneed, lily livered, la-di-da vampire movies of recent years: Saleem hopes that this will be a return to genuine audience terror."

Director's Vision
My intention for this film is to make something truly unsettling and terrifying. These aren't going to be your usual vampires, as can be seen from the concept artwork. I want to move away from the current 'romantic' view and take them back to how they were in folklore - really nasty stuff.

I want the production values to be high in this film. I want to use all aspects of filmmaking to tell my story: performance, lighting, camerawork, sound design, color, production design and so on. This is why I also want to shoot this single-location film in a studio so as to have full control over all these visual aspects.
The themes in this film are powerful too. It's about truly wanting to do or be something you feel is right for you - that you're born to do - and you are willing to be true to that no matter what. The fantasy/horror genre is an interesting and unique way to highlight this very real theme - and in a way that hasn't been explored in this genre before.
