Call and Response

Your Story, Our Story

Call and Response is a community building project designed to increase the positive impact of the musical community. You get what you give. Music is energy.  We help people create positive music in order to put positive energy back into their communities.

The Call:
What do you have to say? Express yourself by picking the perks that call out to the community in the way that you prefer. Help us give positivity to our young people and the community. Let's band together to help our young people to succeed through the positive power of music.

The Response:
The positive activities and experiences in the community, of which everyone gets to share in. Your response will provoke a response from the community.

"In African cultures, call and response is a pervasive pattern of democratic participationin public gatherings, in the discussion of civic affairs, in religious rituals, as well as in vocal and instrumental musical expression" (According to Wikipedia). You can join us in being both a speaker and listener for the community.

Community Records L3C (CR L3C) is a social mission organization that builds community by bringing together diverse populations through music and music education.  We create relationships with people, organizations and communities to produce creative solution to social barriers using art.  We promote positivity in community music, teambuilding and creativity workshops, as well as, live events that embody the power of music to bring people together.

The Impact

Over the last three years we have reached 1500 youth who have created over 50 songs (listen to them here), positive and community oriented. We seek community involvement in expanding our impact.

We acknowledge the true benefit of complete, diverse, and well built communities. This project will provide additional access to music and music education to community members who currently don't have it. But the ripple effects will include a better networked music community, hired musicians, and sharing in the value of community. A true effort in community building.

The perks have been strategically selected to support CR L3C in the coming year by focusing on programming with the most community impact, involvement, and that are sound next steps for the organization. Of course the perks benefit you as well through the tangible items you receive, the front you'll get to community building through music, and the intangible results of your participation.

Success in meeting our goal would result in:

  • A crowdsourced community project (DIWO Community Project);
  • CD production for workshop sites that can't afford it, so youth have a tangible professional copy of their effort, voice, and soul to share and take with them;
  • The launch of our first summer music camp focused around not just music but the values of the participants and their connection to the community (Summer 2011);
  • Extended community music programming deeper in the community and to those who currently it is inaccessible;
  • The ability to support youth artists in exploring creativity, their artistry, and their dreams through performance and self-expression to the community and in their album;
  • Enabling us to continue to reach at-risk youth and communities in the most need of powerful music programming;
  • Giving our young people a positive push toward making a better world for all of us;
  • Bringing diverse populations of people together to break down social barriers through music-making; and
  • Helping young people see themselves as community members who can make a positive change in their neighborhoods.

What We Need & What You Get

We need your help.  If you can help us give lots and lots of positive energy to our young people, they will respond ten-fold with more and more positive energy. This is something our youth need desperately: positive energy.  Help us help our young people by making their world brighter and more hopeful through the power of positive music.

Our goal of $12,300 includes complete programming for each of our defined results and projects (e.g. a full week of music camp, reasonable funding for events or printing runs, etc.) Reaching this goal would support our efforts by allowing for proper planning and the ability to offer equal access.

For the most part, 20% of the funds goes to cover the overhead costs incurred to support equipment purchases, administration, logistics, and other program-supporting costs. This is NOT profit, but the cost of providing a service indirectly. We've priced our programming through IndieGoGo to break even, only to ensure sustainability and make public the support of our mission. We are an efficient organization required to uphold our mission by law through L3C legislation and amendments.

By participating, you are calling out to the community in support our mission, local music, and bringing awareness to its positive powers. Check out the great ways you can participate via the perks on the right.

Note: Since the exact distribution of perks and success of the project will not be known until the end, the exact composition and complexity of programming may vary. This is due to the unpredictable concentration of funds and increased IndieGoGo fees in the event of failing to meet our funding goal. Although, most programming may be self-funded at full capacity through traditional outreach and sales in the near future. We commit to providing all services as promised through the purchase of a perk.

A Great Gift

We provide a certificate of support in the name of your choosing. All perk levels serve as a great gift, early arrangements can be made for the holidays. Just email justin@crl3c.org to make arrangements.

Our Call, Your Response

YouTube - The Voice of Music (View/Submit videos on our YouTube channel)

The Call:
We seek a collective voice on the power of music. You make our call louder by contributing your own voice.

The Response:
Share an experience (what happened, your feelings, and describe the impact/result) when music has had a significant impact on you, your community, or a young person. This can be shared in whatever way you please.

YouTube/Google Account - In order to upload your video, you must have a valid YouTube account. Click here to create a YouTube account.
Clear sound is crucial - If no one can hear it, no one will watch it. Make sure to shoot in quiet environments and project.
Don't backlight - Make sure light is on your face and not behind it i.e. don't sit in front of a bright window.
Title and tag your video - Use the title "The Voice of Music" and include your name and location - ex: "The Voice of Music: Jesse and Terry in Ann Arbor". Use tags to describe your video so that other people can find it ex: "songwriter," "ypsilanti," and "concert" and don't forget to include "the voice of music" as a tag.

DIWO Community Project (Submit/Vote on an idea)

Unleash the DIWO! As a community building organization, we must 'Do It With Others.' Partnership and collaboration are essential to our efforts. All the funds raised through the $25 and $750 perks will go towards funding a project idea in collaboration with Community Records. We are using a powerful tool, Google moderator, to help organize community feedback.

These projects will be voted on by the community. The top three projects will have 50%, 25%, and 25%, respectively, of the raised funds available to put on their program with Community Records. For example, if $1500 is raised, the amounts would be $750, $375, and $375. The only two requirements are that 1) the project is local (in Southeast Michigan) or easily accomplished without extensive travel and 2) the submitted idea is related to the mission and purpose of Community Records and this project. CR L3C reserves the right to remove a program from contention if these requirements are not met at our sole discretion, although we bet the community will naturally not select these projects anyway.

We look forward to working with the winning projects!
