How To Post a Project Profile on IndieGoGo

Hey Folks,

Every project creator on IndieGoGo is equipped with two profiles:

  • one for their project (i.e. Project profile), which shows up in the Projects Listing Page
  • one for themselves (i.e. Individual profile), which fans can link to from their project profile

How to Post a Project Profile:

1. GET STARTED
Click on the green "Post a Project" button on the Home Page.  (Make sure you have signed up and logged in.  If you haven't registered yet, you will be prompted to do so, which automatically creates your individual profile).

2. CREATE PROJECT PROFILE:
To open a project profile, fill in some basic info.  Include your project's title, tagline, category and location.  Use the Description field to give your pitch:

  • What's the project about?
  • Why are you so passionate about it?
  • Who's joining you in this effort to bring it to life?
  • How much do you need to raise and how will the funds be used?
  • Why are you enlisting crowdfunding and why are your perks irresistible!?

Don't just copy & paste your project's synopsis.  Then click SUBMIT to get your project started.

3a. INFO

Thumbnail.   Your project's thumbnail image is the square image that shows up when your project is displayed on the Home Page or Projects Page. It's also the image of your widget.  Make it striking to captivating browsers attention and make them click.

Primary Video / Image.  Your project's pitch clip goes here.  If you don't have one, we strongly encourage you to make one.  Here's why: The Importance of a Pitch Clip

While you're making a pitch clip, you can upload a primary image.  The primary image or video is the first thing people will see when they go to your project profile.  If you upload nothing here, we will automatically add your thumbnail image as your primary image for you.

Tags.  Add tags (What are Tags) so people can discover your project when searching by subject or topic.

Web Presences.  Besides your funding platform, IndieGoGo is also your online social media hub.  Add the url addresses of your project's online presences; for example your project's YouTube channel or Facebook page.

If you Connect on Facebook, all your actions and your friends' actions will also hit the Facebook newsfeeds, thereby alerting friends of friends to your projects DIWO (Do-It-With-Others) activity!

Links.  Just got a write up in your local newspaper?  Have a cause your project is supporting.  Add any additional links to help showcase your project.

Twitter Activity.  No matter what stage your project is in, you should be buzzing on Twitter!  So we're bringing your Twitter buzz right to your fans on IndieGoGo.

We default your Twitter feed to your project's title.  Feel free to change it to an @term, #term, "keyword".  We will automatically pull in the latest twitter updates according to your term.

Custom URL.  Every project gets its own vanity url on IndieGoGo.  This is great for business cards and marketing materials.  Add it to your email signature too.

3c.  FUNDING.  If you don't need to raise money at this time, skip this section!  If you do, fill in your immediate funding goal and VIP perks, and pick your payment system (Amazon Payments for US projects and Global Payments for non-US projects).

We recommend that you:

  • Break your funding goal into several mini-goals, and fundraise for one mini-goal one funding period at a time.  By doing this, your fundraising strategy is more transparent and specific and helps you build a track record of fundraising success.  There's no limit to the number of funding periods you can open.
  • Offer interesting and creative VIP perks for your fans fund your project.  VIP perks are your way to provide incentives for fan support and sell ancillary items and intangible experiences around your project, not just the project's end product.  It can be a credit (film), a free download or album (music), a signed copy of your book (writing), an invite to a launch party (venture), a personal recipe (food), a private lesson (art), etc.  Don't limit your imagination, and ask your fans what they would want in return for a contribution if you're stumped.  Also, whether it's discount they get "if they buy now" or a signed limited edition version that won't be available later, give funders an incentive to contribute and "lock-in" the perk now versus later.

Once you start fundraising, the following detail will be made available in your Funding section so you can deliver on your VIP Perks:

  • List of your funders
  • Their email addresses
  • Their selected VIP Perks

Such detail is only available to you and the team members to whom you've given editing rights.  However, all of your funders' faces and contribution amounts will be celebrated on your FUNDERS tab.

3d. GALLERY.  As the project unfolds, we encourage you to capture video footage, take pictures to document progress, which we hope you will share with your fans and funders via the UDPATES tab.

Every time you share a video, image or document in UPDATES, your funders will receive an email with the summary of updates for the day, and the GALLERY will automatically archive them.

GALLERY

3e. EVENTS.  Take your online fans offline!  Announce upcoming events, whether they're showcases, guest appearances, fundraising parties, etc.

*PROJECT PROFILE TIPS:

The more information you put on your project profile, the better. This is your vehicle to pitch the world.  Don't hold back.

Also, every time you make an Announcement, your community (everyone who has taken action: funded, shared, commented, etc.) will get an automatic email with your announcement

"You've Built it... Now Make Them Come!"

A project profile is the cornerstone of your fan-engagement and fundraising campaign.  What it is NOT, is the campaign on its own. Unfortunately the "build it and they will come" idea doesn't exist when it comes to breaking into any industry, building your reputation or simply growing awareness for your next project

But what IndieGoGo can do is provide the internet tools to "build it and MAKE them come."  Check out: Audience-Building 101: Step-by-Step Guide from IndieGoGo.  Also, check out some other helpful links below.

Note: Don't Wait for "Perfect"

When it comes to your project profile, don't wait for perfect to launch your audience-building  and fundraising efforts.  You'll never get to perfect, and that's OK.  Just update your profile with new videos, cast additions, awards, events, and other announcements as you go.  Let your fans give you ideas too via the Comments section.  The more fresh content you provide, the more you'll entertain current fans and give them reason to pull their friends to your profile too... hence audience-building!
