Thanks to all the great customer feedback and suggestions, we're excited to bring you a new Home Page, Project Profiles and Individual/Organization Profiles. Overall, the enhancements:
- Showcase project media more prominently
- Make the site easier to use
- Help people discover completed and work-in-progress films more efficiently
Below are some highlighted changes. Please tell us what you think!
HOME PAGE updates include: 1. Prominent discover box to help you find films faster
2. Live Updates of DIWO (Do-It-With-Others) activity across the site, IndieGoGo community Twitter buzz, and follow icons to keep you updated on all things DIWO.
PROFILE UPDATES INCLUDE:
1. For projects, more prominent showcasing of the film's trailer or pitch clip to hook viewers instantly!
2. For individuals and organizations, more prominent showcasing of all the projects people are participating in or following.
3. For projects, an online social media hub to display the project's online presences. Filmmakers can include links to LinkedIn, MySpace, IMDB, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and the project's website. Also, the Facebook link automatically defaults to a project's profile within the IndieGoGo Facebook application which allows friends on Facebook to contribute, follow, and share without ever having to leave Facebook.
4. What's New window to showcase the feed of fresh content: announcements, comments, contributions, videos, images and files.
5. Twitter Feeds to keep fans updated whether the project's or person is in production or premiering at a festival.
Again, we hope you enjoy the updates. We always appreciate feedback, and look forward to making even more updates based on your ideas in the future! Cheers

Richard Parry spent 15 years following war photographer Robert King as he documented conflicts in Chechnya, Russia, Afghanistan, Rwanda, Albania, Kosovo and Iraq. His documentary, Blood Trail, recently screened at SilverDocs 2009. The road to distribution was tough. Read on to learn how Richard has navigated the DIY Filmmaking terrain.
1. What are your goals for Blood Trail?
After 15 years in production my hopes are high. Hopefully
some kind of theatrical window, TV and DVD. Winning awards would be nice but
I'm not holding my breath. Ultimately, ego aside, getting the movie to a wider
audience as possible has to be the motive, doesn't it? Its a unique and
powerful watch and I don't now when I'll have the opportunity to work on another
film like this one, so I'm trying to 'make hay while the sun shines'. And its
been virtually a full time occupation playing the festivals and trying to get
it out there, since our premiere at Toronto.
2. How are you identifying, reaching and building your
audience?
Mostly festivals thus far. TIFF, SXSW, Silverdocs etc. But
we should be about to start a wider campaign with the ICA in London screening
the film in August, then our UK TX on BBC Storyville in September. I guess the
grass roots approach starts now. The film centers on a War Photographer and so
building good word of mouth amongst journalists has been and will continue to
be pivotal. Creating a word of mouth amongst the journalist fraternity has been
part of the plan. "this is the genuine war hack doc" type of thing.
Obviously journalists are in a good position to help push this film.
3. What tactics did you use for financing? Any advice?
Self financed. 15 years. No cash. I dont recommend it, but
if you're feeling stubborn!!
4. What role does the Internet and social media play in your
DIWO (Do-It-With-Others) fundraising or audience-building?
That remains to be seen. We'll know more over the next few
months, as the film starts to find its way to the public. I would imagine that
twitter and the like could play an important tole in creating word of mouth for
a film like this. But we'll see which way the distributors push it.
5. What is your plan for distribution? Any consideration for
self-distribution?
We have a traditional distributer for the UK, who is
handling a small theatric pre TX. The DVD and download market will come
subsequently. We have looked at 4 walling as a means of qualifying the film for
certain US awards but not decided. There are some US distributors interested in
the project but we have yet to sign. I directed and wrote a movie (South West
Nine) a few years ago that was self distributed especially badly. The theatres
were keen to take the film in the UK and we opend on about sixty screens but we
didn't have the financial muscle to support such an opening. The film would
have been better opening on a smaller number of screens with a concentrated
marketing local marketing campaign. So self distribution is a tricky one and in
this instance not fruitful. Of course, with hind sight, it could have been done
better.

By Saskia Wilson-Brown, originally for Current TV
Congratulations! You have succeeded in making a video, and have
successfully uploaded it to one of many fine online video hosting
sites. That, for some of us, may feel like an achievement in itself. But let’s get real for a second: So what? It only counts if people see it. Be
it a short documentary, an indie animation, a video blog or even a
slide show of your niece’s 3rd birthday party (and we sincerely hope
it’s not the latter), there are tons of ways that you can maximize your
audience and help turn your video into a viral hit. This is a 5-part weekly blog series that will provide an introduction on how to best get eyeballs to your content. Simple.
Episode 5 follows. Catch other episodes here:
FINAL BLOG: MY FAVORITE RESOURCES FOR FILMMAKERS
Cogs of the viral machine: Designed to help the most popular
websites bubble up to people’s attention, these sites all allow you to
add some weight to your selected webpage, and purport to reflect what
the world is looking at, online. There are literally hundreds of them,
but here are the best.
Social Networking sites: Go make some friends, and promote
yourself, too! Don’t be obnoxious, remember people are not keen on
being marketed to. They are keen, however, on making friends with cool
people who happen to have amazing projects.
Video hosting sites: There are, like social networking
sites, a ton of these. Here are the ones most commonly used, and which
also contain a heavy community influence.
Learn some basics of HTML: These basics and tutorials will only come in handy.
Press releases: Handy resources for writing press releases.

and their audience to interact, and to building a community that
translates artistic vision into commercial success. They sell films
online through DVD orders or streaming. http://www.indieflix.com/
- Spout: Movie reviews, ratings, details, synopsis, summary
and new movie trailers. Discuss films in the movie groups & use the
tools to get your work out there. http://www.spout.com/
Fundraising: Goes without saying that to make a film, you
often need some cash. Micro-funding from friends and family often is a
wonderful first step, and some of these sites provide widgets and other
tools to blanket the web.
- IndieGoGo: Finance your project with micro-payments from your friends and contacts. Sheer brilliance. http://www.indiegogo.com
- Pledgie.com: Sign in with your twitter account, set
specific goals, spread the word. Remarkably simple, but you’re on your
own with getting the word out.
- Don't forget about on the ground events: Bake sale, car
wash… A little goes a long way, so if you have the energy, there’s
nothing for fostering support for your film like having the lead
actress washing someone’s car.
Need to be inspired? Google these people and learn from the pros.
