To Twitter, or not to Twitter?... Wait, what is Twitter again?

Twitter Trix may be for Kids, but Twitter is certainly not.  It's for filmmakers and their fans.

Twitter is a great micro-blogging and thus marketing tool for filmmakers to keep their fanbase updated and growing.  It's a simple utility that allows you to blog a short message or "tweet" to all your followers at once via text or the web, as well as a to receive short messages from those that you're following.

On Twitter, "tweets" can't be longer than 140 characters; so it's easy to blog from your phone or computer.  Great sample "tweets" include:

  • "Film is screening tonight at the Warner Theater on Park Ave.  Starts at 7 pm.  Come!"
  • "We're in the final 3 days of our funding round.  Contribute at www.indiegogo.com/YourProject
  • "Anyone know a good editor?  Looking for a one to start on my documentary in November."

When you send out a "tweet," all your followers instantly get the message to their phone or online account.  So the big question is: how do you attract followers... i.e. fans?

  1. First, sign-up for an account at www.twitter.com
  2. Let your current fans know you have a twitter account.  Make an announcement in your project profile, and share your twitter username.  For example, you can follow Slava at www.twitter.com/GoGoSlava or me at www.twitter.com/GoGoDanae.
  3. Add your indiegogo.com url (www.indiegogo.com/projectname) and your twitter username to your signature in your emails.
  4. Start following other people, and soon people will start following you.
  5. Start sending out Tweets via text (to 40404) or via the web at www.twitter.com/YourUsername whenever you have an interesting announcement or progress update.  (Twitter's instructions will help you set up your phone.)

Have fun!
