Who are we? What are we doing?
BACON is the Best All-Around Club of Nerds, the Science Club at Charlottesville High School. We compete in science competitions, host fun science events (like sending balloons into space through our Super Space Adventures) and take trips. This coming April, we will be taking 32 students on a trip to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). This ten-day trip will include visits to Paris, Besançon (Charlottesville's sister city), and Geneva - the location of the LHC.
The main purpose of this trip will be to expose students to
the most advanced, ambitious, and groundbreaking physics research ever
conducted. The current research at CERN has the potential to rewrite the laws of
physics, and a visit to CERN has the potential to excite and inspire
future scientists. Additionally, through home stays in Besançon and
sightseeing in Paris, the trip aims to provide the enriching
educational benefit of developing transatlantic relationships and
experiencing foreign cultures.
Why?
As
we speak, scientists at CERN are conducting groundbreaking research and
rewriting the science textbooks for future generations. It is
imperative that our students gain an interest and understanding in such
endeavors. A two-day tour of CERN will surely aid in our students’
comprehension of particle physics, the study of the mechanisms and
interactions that underlie all chemical, biological, and cosmological
processes. But more importantly, through exposure to the leading edge
of physics research, this trip is intended to excite students about
scientific progress and demonstrate the power of experimentation and
collaboration outside of the classroom. This trip is also intended to
promote cultural literacy and understanding through travel, dining,
lodging, and recreation in both Switzerland and France.
What We Need
We need money to cover the cost of travel, lodging, food, and tours. Specifically, the cost breakdown per student is as follows: $1300 for travel; $300 for meals; $300 for lodging; $100 for tours and exhibits. Thirty-six students are scheduled to attend, and without fundraising the total cost is $2000 per student. Unfortunately, not all students can afford this. Any donations are welcome to lower the per-student cost and facilitate this trip for all who want to go!
