What is Polybe + Seats?

Polybe + Seats is a Brooklyn-based company that has been making theater together since 2001. We take inspiration from Gertrude Steins writing for and about the theater, and we have taken our name from one of her plays. The members of our company are Jessica Brater, Catherine Wallach, Miriam Felton-Dansky, Ari Vigoda, Stacey McMath, Avi Glickstein, Elaine OBrien, Natalie Robin, Sarah Sakaan and Lindsay Torrey.

All about Alice, or the Scottish Gravediggers

In October 2011 Polybe + Seats will present the English-language premiere of the sinister 1829 French melodrama Alice, or the Scottish Gravediggers at the Old Stone House in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Our take on this gruesome tale of love and betrayal investigates a moment in medical history during which doctors and anatomists paid top dollar for the freshest corpses possible. Body snatching, grave robbing, and even murder were the basis for major discoveries in medical science. This turning point in anatomical discovery is the inspiration for our work.

What we need

Thanks to our amazing supporters, we have reached our goal of nearly $5,000 to bring this project to completion. This brings our total raised to over $17,000 through fundraising events and grants from the Brooklyn Arts Council, the Alliance of Resident Theaters / New York and the Mental Insight Foundation. However, we still need your support. Any funds raised above our goal will enrich the production and give even bigger stipends to our artists! The funds we raise through this campaign will pay the performers and designers who are working with us and will bring our vision to life on stage with inventive sets, rich costumes, site-specific lighting and live music.
