Prepare To Experience A Spine-Tingling Supernatural Game

Halloween 2011, San Francisco. Eccentric UK producer, Oliver Drew, arrives in the foggy city with a mystical old Zoetrope he claims will open up the spirit world as an entertainment platform.

Oliver_Drew

Occult Transmedia Producer Oliver Drew, visit his hotel room.

In this immersive storytelling experience you are recruited as a Paranormal Investigator and given access to Oliver's mobile phone as a means to find him, but there's a catch - it's haunted!

You will decipher odd private emails, listen to chilling voicemails, scan QR codes to unlock hidden content, take creepy calls from ghosts and phantoms, discover frightening video and audio content and find clues to break the hex on his secret documents; but, be warned: a wicked and terrifying force is calling.

Will you answer the phone? Can you save Oliver's soul? DARE YOU TAKE A SPIN WITH DEATH?

Welcome to horror Alternative Reality Game Zoetrap - a world where Victorian Occultism collides with 21st Century technology to take you on a terrifying ride through the spirit world.

Beneath the surface of this exciting transmedia journey lies another story for you to discover.

It's hinted at in the mysterious Tarot cards turning up in random locations around town.. Could it have something to do with Victorian serial killer Arthur Warburton Lytton (aka 'Prisoner L'), one of the most terrible Alcatraz inmates?

Can you work out what he wants before he comes for you?

How do I play?

This Halloween Horror narrative is played out across real world events, the Web, an App and print products during the three-day StoryWorld Conference & Expo in San Francisco, October 31 - November 2. You don't have to be there to join in: the journey has already begun... follow Oliver @_zoetrap

Why are we fundraising?

We successfully gained a sponsor to develop and code the App for this experience. AppFurnace, based in Bristol, UK, pledged 5,000 to build our App. This is the main reason we have been able to get so far on a shoestring budget. However! We really need more help towards the print and real world production costs for the event to make it a more frightening and immersive experience for those who play. Those elements include:

  •  Newspaper articles
  •  A ghost pamphlet
  •  Bespoke Tarot cards
  • Theatrical props and costumes
  • A final party where players get to decide Oliver Drew's fate and find out what really happened.

Why Should You Care?

Most importantly because this is an exciting experiment in multiplatform storytelling and if you're going to the StoryWorld conference in San Francisco it will be a Halloween experience you won't want to miss.

Also, if we don't reach our fundraising goal we will have a great App and loads of brilliant ideas but won't be able to create the really exciting three-day event that will show off the full potential of the project.

Prisoner L played by actor Stephen Casey

The team consists of professionals working in the creative industries (more about us below) who met on a post-graduate creative practice course run by Cyfle and devised the project in three months in response to a brief set by Alison Norrington, Transmedia Producer and Storyteller and Chair of the StoryWorld Conference.

It is a high quality production featuring professional actors Stephen Casey, Gareth Milton and Mali Tudno Jones.

We haven't been paid for any of this work, all of us have other jobs and are covering our own travel and accommodation costs so the production will go ahead.

We are a new UK transmedia collective that believes in creativity in storytelling, and especially in exploring new ways of experiencing stories. If you feel the same then please give generously to help us pull off an experience that will show off some of the exciting potential of transmedia storytelling.

We hope this site will help fund the production costs of the project and allow us to create a high-quality documentary of the process that will showcase an interesting transmedia case study.

Zoetrap is not only a gripping story, but it's told in a way that can reach out to people and interact in a different way. This is a story where players become characters in an immersive alternate reality game that brings them into the heart of the storytelling experience.

It is also an experience that we can put on in other places and expand further in the future.

Zoetrap deserves to be shown off to its full potential and the only way for this to happen is for you to give a little!  In return, there are several perks and each and everyone of you will receive a special mention on our website and get a link to view the documentary online after completion.

Why The Documentary Needs Support

If we are able to raise more than the target amount we will put the rest towards the post-production costs. The documentary will include behind-the-scenes footage and interview, footage of the events taking place in San Francisco, interviews with players and an original music score.

We believe the documentary will:

  • Introduce new audiences to a different kind of storytelling.
  • Showcase the project and be a case study that can help others interested in telling stories over multiple platforms to see the potential.
  • Be great PR for the art of transmedia storytelling and enhance understanding of innovative practice.
  • Be a guide for students of transmedia.
  • Inform future artistic practices and debates about the possibilities and limitations of multiplatform storytelling.

There Are Other Ways You Can Help!

Word of mouth can go a long way in helping us. Please tweet about the project, share it on Facebook and other social network sites, blog and tell people about Zoetrap if the project inspires you.

Please also play along with the story by communicating with our character Oliver Drew on Twitter @_zoetrap.

Thank you all for your help and support.
