Woody Guthrie Dreams

-a play about the iconic folk singer & agitator

Our Story

Woody Guthrie Dreams is a play with music about the life, ideas & dreams of America's greatest troubadour, Woodrow Wilson Guthrie, an agitator, a sign painter, and a guitar picker.

Michael Patrick F. Smith began writing the play in 2002, reading Guthrie's writings, interviewing his buddies, talking to his family and immersing himself in the music. A previous version of the play appeared at Creative Alliance in Baltimore in 2004. Now, after nearly a decade of work, the play will receive it's New York premiere at Theater for the New City on September 8th, 2011.

The Impact

Raising the money that we need through this campaign will mean New York City will be singing Woody Guthrie songs for the entire month of September.  And longer.

What We Need & What You Get

We have already raised over $15,000 from individual donors and through throwing fund raising parties.  We now need $10,000 to cover the rest of our costs.  This campaign will pay for our costumes, the set, as well as our lighting and sound design.  It will cover the modest stipends we are offering to our excellent design team and incredibly talented actors and musicians. This campaign will pay for our fliers and press material so we can get the word out loud and clear about what we believe is a powerful & important project.

Other Ways You Can Help

Please tell your friends!  We truly believe that this play contributes greatly to the legacy of Woody and we believe Woody's legacy is as important now as it ever was.  Woody's story deserves to be told and the people of this country deserve to hear it.
