GOING THE DISTANCE
My name is Teresa Scott and I am the Founder of Women's World of Boxing Inc.
I began my journey in 2007 determined to open the first women only boxing gym in New York City. After being introduced to boxing and training for 8 years, I reduced my high blood pressure and high cholesterol, battled depression along with low self esteem and lost over 60lbs. Discovering my new passion and mission, to open a women only boxing gym, I immersed myself in the boxing world. I became a registered USA Boxing Coach and earned both my CPR certification and my Boxing Fitness Certification. I joined several boxing gyms to train and conduct research on the environment and challenges women face in boxing gyms.
I found boxing gyms had the following in common: Dirt, a 365-day horrible stench, almost non-existent women's locker rooms, vulgar trainers, lack of real training/instruction for women, inappropriate physical contact from the trainers, and such an uninviting atmosphere, it would make even the most confident woman uncomfortable.
After visiting gym after gym, it became clear to me that women & girls were being deprived of the total mind, body, and spirit rewards from this sport simply because of the intimidating, male-dominated atmosphere. I recognized the need to provide a safe, empowering, comfortable and uplifting environment for women and girls to explore the sport of boxing.
THE WEIGH IN
Women's World of Boxing will weigh in as a Heavyweight contender in empowering and creating champions by providing a healthy training environment from adolescence to womanhood.
POUND-FOR-POUND
Women's World of Boxing currently trains women and girls ages 14-70. When we began, 5 years ago, we offered one 90 minute Saturday class to 4 women. We currently offer a 90 minute class every week night and 3 Saturday classes averaging 12 women per class. Our presence has dramatically increased the gyms female membership and we have outgrown the hot, smelly, dirty, "don't spit in the fountain" co-ed space designated for us. If we do not acquire our own space, we will not be able to complete our mission and will have to turn away more women and girls.
It's imperative for us to succeed in opening our own boxing gym. In addition to teaching 'The Sweet Science,' Women's World of Boxing also provides a supportive community for women battling disease, health issues, domestic violence, addictions and other challenges. We prove each day that boxing in a safe environment surrounded by other women who box provides a total mind-body-spirit empowerment, wellness and encouragement. Not only will we create and build healthier communities, but we will also have a strong impact on the economy. Women's World of Boxing will provide jobs by hiring contractors, administrative personnel, personal trainers, counselors, and nutritionists.
