Our Story

It is in our best interest to educate all children. But what happens when a small towns school system suddenly becomes 50% minority? Follow six Hispanic high school students, living their personal struggles and triumphs in hopes of achieving the American Dream.

When We Stop Counting examines the Nebraskan small town Crete and its progressive adaptation towards an influx of Hispanic immigrants. Crete Public Schools is at the heart of this community. Followed over a school year and given cameras to document their personal lives, the six students put faces to the issues of education and immigration.

Administration, faculty and scholars also lend their words to familiarize viewers on the education system's successes and shortcomings, and illustrate how our future bodes well if we educate everyone.

The Impact

In the past year, certain places in America have seen the passing of legislative bills that separate families, let children slip through the cracks, and inhibit the potential of our upcoming generation. When We Stop Counting looks deeply into the heart of a school and exposes that what is at stake is the livelihood of its community and how educating its population is the key to its success.

Crete and its Public School are a model for communities across Nebraska and across the nation. Its success proves that communities thrive through adaptation and integration. Exposing this story is tantamount to the success of our towns, our children, and our future.

What We Need & What You Get

When We Stop Counting was funded by a grant from the Nebraska Humanities Council and gracious in-kind support from the Nebraska Department of Education. Our ultimate goal is broadcast, and the financial goal is $5000 to pay for professional-level fine tunings, namely high-end color correction and audio re-mastering, to bring the production to broadcast quality.
