Our Story
WNC Woman magazine's vision is to be a hub that connects women to each other and to events and projects in their communities. We give voice to a wide range of women who want to speak about their experiences and challenges, their joys and "watershed" moments. We're all about empowering women of all ages to be who they truly are and to go for their dreams. Each month we inspire our readers with stories, dynamic profiles of other women who've overcome obstacles, and information they can use in their daily lives. Even our advertising helps promote and support local women (and men) and their businesses. We also like to inject a bit of humor to help us all keep things in perspective!
The Impact
WNC Woman started with a vision and a small amount of capital from several supporters in our region. We have always been a grassroots publication: free distribution, accepting a variety of submissions from local women (and men, once a year). We started with 24 pages, 5000 distribution and built to our current 56 pages and 16,000 copies. Little by little we have expanded our reach to outlying areas; we have upgraded the printing and the quality of the content and improved the website which contains all nine years of issues. All this on a miniscule budget and with very little staff. As the economy has contracted in the past three years, ad sales have contracted at the same time, making it harder and harder to keep the publication afloat. There are many free magazines in our region; but we hear daily how important WNC Woman is to our readers and our advertisers. Now is your opportunity to insure that this magazine and all it represents for women's empowerment is able to continue and to thrive.
What We Need & What You Get
WNC Woman needs an infusion of capital to make it possible to do several important things: maintain positive cash flow and pay expenses on time; support ad sales staff while they are prospecting and building their commission base (they have to work much harder now to get the same amount of sales) and give us time to re-build our advertising base to sustainable levels.
We want to raise $10,000 over the next three months (and of course, as much of that as possible quickly). We don't have assets or the yearly income to be eligible for business loans so we are taking this chance that our readers will band together to give whatever amounts they can afford. If every reader donated a dollar we'd be beyond our goal! We know that not everyone will take the time to do that, so we have a couple of incentives for donors! If you contribute $10 you will be listed on our website as a Supporter; for a $25 contribution we will send you a gorgeous Women Move Mountains bumper sticker and list you as a Sustainer; and for each $50 contribution we will send a year's subscription to the magazine to you or your mom, your aunt or best friend who's not lucky enough to live in WNC, and list you as a Matron.
