I wish everything I touched would turn to gold, and every word I wrote would flutter off and break the mold.
That, in essence, is the desire of every songwriter: for each lyric, every melody and accompanying harmony to turn into something beautiful, to fly off the page and magically become a world-changing compositiontheir own “Blowin’ in the Wind,” the next “Both Sides Now.”
Unfortunately, it’s not that easy. Songwriting takes time, patience, and, in my case, a really excellent rhyming dictionary (with a list of cliches to avoid scribbled on a page in the back). Arlo Guthrie once said at a concert that writing a song is like catching a fish: “You put in your line and hope you catch something” (and most of us are, sadly, fishing downstream of Bob Dylan).
I started “fishing” on my 13th birthday, when my older brother gave me a classical guitar. Seven years, and about 50 songs later, I find myself ridiculously close to finishing my first album, Turn to Gold. While I have always loved to perform (those close to me can attest to the fact that I am always singing), my real passion lies in songwriting, and Turn to Gold is the product of that. Influenced heavily by the music of Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Antje Duvekot, andof coursethe incomparable Jenny Lewis, my debut album aims to blend old-school folky with the mod indie chick-rock styles of the late nineties and early Ots.
For those of you who are familiar with my music, the album includes these songs:
- Afraid of Heights
- My Own Berlin
- Since I Left New Orleans
- Somebody’s Net
- Half Moon Child (to be featured in the 2010 film Killing the Dog)
- House of Cards
and
- Alone Tonight
Produced by the fantastic Jason Brown and recorded in Saratoga Springs, NY, this album is sort of my baby. With your support, my dream of being a professional songwriter can become something more of a reality. And if I could meet Jenny Lewis that’d be pretty cool, too.
