Other than the odd pow wow, Ashley Crowchief’s exposure to her native Blackfoot roots was limited at best; until shortly after her 19th birthday. With Stephen Harper’s apology for the Residential Schools fiasco came a renewed interest in the many dark stories she had heard growing up. Words like: assimilation, abuse, and discrimination, began to appear in the press and were suddenly very much on her mind. Why would the Canadian Government feel the need to make a formal apology about a bunch of schools? Why were people so serious, and some so angry? Was this issue really worthy of being referred to as “The Canadian Holocaust”?
