Sitting in a chair with his head slightly bowed, he watches his blood, flesh and bone collect into the bucket on his lap. Periodically, he will be instructed to walk to the pit latrine and empty the contents of the bucket. The hole is being drilled with an arrow-shaped tool, by a man with no formal medical training who does not use general anaesthetic. This is trepanation, the oldest know form of surgery, traced back as far as 6500BC and still practiced today.

This film is a conversation between cultures. Between the culture that depends on Mr Makoris knowledge and a culture that considers him barbaric. The mediator in this conversation is context. A rich and layered understanding of life in rural Kenya will emerge from intimate, in depth character studies through the mundane and the morbid. We will witness the full spectrum of human emotion in a radically different setting.

Kisii, the district where Mr. Makori works, is a character in its own right. A highland region, elevated from the Lake Victoria basin, Kisii is blessed with frequent rainfall that arrives with thunder and lighting. This vast stretch of hills is lush and cultivated, with several rivers coursing the valleys. It is a deeply mystical place that demands a slower, more meditative pace of life and a sensibility and respect for the unknown.
