The CORE Effigy Burn
The CORE (Circle of Regional Effigies) project invites Burning Man communities from around the world to submit effigies representative of their culture to be placed in a circle around the Man. This highly ambitious undertaking will culminate in the simultaneous burning of 24 pieces: the largest coordinated burn in the events 25-year history.
The Tree of Heaven
The Tree of Heaven is the greater NYC community's contribution to the CORE effigy burn. It consists of a luminous subway map that appears to be embedded in the Playa floor, glowing with the vibrant energy of the city that never sleeps.
From the center of the map a tree pushes its way towards the light, as if busting up through a crack in the cement. A captivating mash-up of organic tree-shapes and steel, concrete and chain-link textures, it erupts in thousands of leaves that are customized by the entire New York City area Burning Man community to reflect our brilliant diversity.
Benches, each owned and designed by a different New York City area Burning Man artist or collective, surround the piece, offering participants an opportunity to relax and reflect on their relationships to NYC, BRC and the growing, changing world around them. At each bench, sound artist Douglas Hart will create a different installation that reflects the sounds of the city.
The Impact
The Tree of Heaven offers NYC-area Burners to collaborate on an art project that represents our community. As Burning Man gains popularity and participants, large regional communities such as NYC become increasingly factioned into theme camps and sub-cultures, and we have begun to lose the sense of ourselves as a cohesive community. Our contribution to the CORE regionals project offers us a valuable opportunity to come together as a single community once again, and prove to ourselves and to the world that together we are greater than the sum of our parts.
And what better way to do it than to build something that will look great going up in flames?
What We Need & What You Get
We need your help to purchase our materials - lumber, metal, lighting, sound. We've already gotten some amazing assistance: router time has been generously donated by SceniCorp, and shipping provided by the NYC Container Crew.

$25 can get you a leaf from the tree
$50 can get you a leather leaf necklace based on the design of the tree
$100 can get you a custom picture frame based on the design of the tree
$150 gets you a leaf necklace AND picture frame
$250 puts you on Sparky the Fire Truck for the Art Car parade prior to the burn on Thursday night.
