What does being blind mean for a five-year old in Tanzania? How does a little child with cerebral palsy live in Burkina Faso? What are the dreams of a small boy with an amputated leg in Cambodia?
In all three countries there are laws and policies that have been created in recognition of international conventions to guarantee disabled people equal rights and full inclusion and participation in society. There is precious little statistical information about disability. Rights, that we all take for granted are often not extended to disabled people -for reasons of ignorance, prejudice or lack of understanding. So, what does that mean for the children in real life?
This film, made by ADD International, will be the first in a series of documentaries following three disabled children under the age of six in three different countries. It will introduce the children and their families and show us how they live and deal with their disability: How does it affect friendships, social status in the community, education and employability? What are their biggest worries and greatest hopes? How does the government and the community they live in help or hinder their development?
Every three years we will come back to the same children and see what has changed – and what hasn’t? Where are the children and their families now and where do they hope to be in three years’ time?
Illustrating the socio-economic effects of disability on children and their families over years, the films will serve as a powerful tool to help change perceptions and practices, and ultimately the lives of disabled children.
