This documentary will tell the story behind two ground-breaking Canadian studies in early childhood development, The Early Years (1 & 2). These studies prove unequivocally that children’s earliest experiences are far more important than previously thought. Backed by solid scientific evidence, these studies prove that the majority of critical human brain development occurs prior to the age of six. Explosive new findings in epigenetic science indicate that a childs early life experiences directly impact genetic expression. This means that the environment in which a child lives and the nurturing they receive during these early years have serious lifelong impacts on their physical and mental health, cognitive well-being and behaviour.

Commentary from experts in neuroscience, genetics, early childhood education, and child psychology, as well as observations from the studies authors and co-chairs, the Honourable Margaret McCain and Dr. Fraser Mustard, will reveal the whole story behind the findings of these studies.

Evidence from medical research will be presented, as well as data showing how socioeconomic status effects learning in early childhood, how advances in society and technology have detracted from early learning, how Canadas children compare internationally, what the implications are in other countries that have embraced the research, and what the economic consequences will be if the evidence continues to be ignored here in Canada. An example of
a successful (despite the lack of government support) community-based movement which embraces the studies values will be observed.

Ultimately, the Long Reach of Early Childhood will provide a call-to-arms for a paradigm shift in how the needs of the smallest, most vulnerable members of our society our children – are met.
