The Legend of Toilet-Seat Charlie to premiere at the 32nd Mill Valley Film Festival.
The 12-minute documentary will screen at the Rafael Theater, on Friday, October 16th at 5:00 pm. A second screening will occur at the 142 Throckmorton Theater on Saturday, October 17th, at 5:30 pm.
Jeremy Kaller’s documentary profiles the late Charlie Deal, Mill Valley’s own rock n roll dreamer and inventor of the toilet-seat guitar. Charlie, often on the fringe of the famous Marin County music scene, became known for his line of toilet-seat guitars. Although the long list of Deal Guitar owners includes Jorma Kaukonen and Jerry Garcia, Charlie’s most famous guitar is pictured on the cover of Huey Lewis and News’ classic album, Sports.
A guitarist himself, Charlie led his own band, Charlie’s Gang, Marin County’s longest running rock n roll revue. Over the years, many of Marin’s finest musicians have sat in with Charlie’s Gang and Charlie eventually became known as the “unofficial mayor” of Mill Valley.
The Legend of Toilet-Seat Charlie features interviews with Pete Sears of Jefferson Starship, guitar-tech Larry Cragg, 2009 Millie Award recipient Steve Bajor, Jim Hite of Wet Nurse, and Duane Van Dieman of the Tazmanian Devils.
The soundtrack includes tracks from legendary Mill Valley musicians, including Wet Nurse, Charlie’s Gang, Austin De Lone, and Huey Lewis and the News.
