Our Story
Colleen Mckeown and Christopher Postill are two young Canadian visual and multimedia artists who frequently collaborate on creative projects under the pseudonym "We Ain't Friends". Their mandate is to create things that are honest, poignant and inspired by a Do-It-Yourself approach. In the fall of 2010, We Ain't friends published the first installment of a short comic series entitled EZ Grocery & Video. The two continue to create DIY books, crafts and multimedia. Colleen and I originally just wanted to make a single graphic novel. In discussing that, we became good friends and ended up travelling half way across Canada together in a small rental car. Of course, during the drive to and around the East Coast of Canada, we came up with loads of ideas for projects we wanted to collaborate on. "The Flood of 1924" will be our very first film that we've done together and we are both really excited about it. The film will be a short, stop motion picture that tells the story of a young girl in her boat after a great flood has covered everything she knows. She explores on a stormy night, obviously determined & looking for something, but what that is remains unclear. Eventually she finds it sunk at the bottom of the ocean floor, an airtight bunker that is her best chance of finding a friend.
"The Flood of 1924" will be heavily stylized 'paper' animation. Colleen is an incredibly talented artist (as you can see from her concept art above) and she is going to hand cut, paint and animate every part of the film. I (Christopher) work a sound designer & multimedia artist, so I will be creating a moody, quirky and emotional sound scape for the film, as well as directing and editing. We really hope that the hand-made care we are putting into this minute and a half short film will reach viewers in an honest, whimsical and meaningful way.
We will be posting more concept art, sound design and behind-the-scenes of pre-production here as the project comes together, please check back on us!

The Impact
Our movie is a light-hearted look at the strange ways people can interact and help each other in extreme circumstances. The heart of the movie is this young girl searching for something, finding it and eventually (sort of) making a new friend.... (We can't say much more without ruining it for you! And we want you to see it!). We can only hope that, even though our film won't be mushy and blatantly spoon feed viewers that message, it will have an impact on them and make them feel a little better about humankind:)
We are both stubborn and NEED to make this film! Please help us make it as beautiful and interesting a viewing experience as possible! If we are able to promote the film and get it into some festivals we have our eyes on, we hope it'll inspire more amateur filmmakers to experiment with stop motion!
What We Need & What You Get
So why do we need your help? We have most of the equipment we'll need to shoot, we have the idea and we're entirely passionate about making it happen. What we still need is help covering the costs of the materials, promotion (primarily online), and entrance fees to a few festivals we'd like to submit to. We aren't looking to pocket any money whatsoever, we need your help to pull this off the best we can and make a really beautiful film.
- Art Supplies & Materials
- COFFEE!
- Lighting Equipment Rental
- Online Advertising (through Facebook & Google Ads)
- DVD Printing & Reproduction
- Festival Entrance Fees
- A $10 000 after party to celebrate for everyone who contributed!
If we reach our funding goal? We'll be able to produce the movie we envision within our heads. If we don't, any funding we do raise will still go toward creating this short, and we'll do our best to fill in the gaps, but some of the costs may mean we have to make creative concessions.
What do you get for helping us? Have a look at the perks, for a short animated film, we are developing loads of materials, additional music that expands on the soundtrack, buttons, exclusive art, etc. Plus we'll really seriously love you for it.
Other Ways You Can Help
