After a body is found in a small rural town in Texas, everyone blames an escaped, on-the-loose convict Michael Baynes – to be the culprit, except for County Sheriff Tom Maycomb, who likes to Trust his intuition. Enough evidence is found to convict Baynes, but he is unable to be found. When more murders unfold apparently by the same person – Baynes is labeled a serial killer, and FBI detective Jenna Adler is put onto the case. The story takes on national prominence, and Baynes is put on the FBIs most wanted list. The film portrays Sheriff Tom Maycombs hunt for the innocence of Baynes before Tom is forced to retire due to a recent cancerous development.
