Soraida Salwala opened the World’s First Asian Elephant Hospital in Lampang, Thailand in 1993 to treat elephants that are ill or injured as a result of work, abuse or neglect. To date, she and her staff have treated over 3,000 elephants for everything from eye infections to knife wounds, gunshot wounds, broken bones, drug addictions and building prosthetic limbs for the survivors of landmine accidents.
Since then, the Asian Elephant population in Thailand declined from 40,000 to less than 2,600 left in captivity. Not only are Asian Elephants endangered, the remaining elephants are overworked, abused, exported to zoos around the world, or disfigured by stepping on forgotten landmines along the Thai borders.
“The Eyes of Thailand” is a color, feature-length, HD documentary film that exposes the problems facing the Thai Asian Elephants at the Friends of the Asian Elephant (FAE) Elephant Hospital through Soraida’s quest to save them.

WHAT MAKES THIS PROJECT DIFFERENT
|
|
I first met Soraida Salwala at her Elephant Hospital, run by the Friends of Asian Elephants (FAE), while filming a theatre troupe in northern Thailand in 2007. I was profoundly moved by her story, beginning as a young girl with an early love and appreciation for elephants and continuing into her adulthood with her passionate and brave actions to save the species from hardship, abuse and potential extinction. Ignited by admiration for Soraida, and poised to delve deeper into the threats against the Asian Elephants and Soraida’s quest to save them, the "The Eyes of Thailand" began to take shape.
My background in education with Teach For America motivated me to personally reach out to Soraida, in partnership, to publish a weekly blog about FAE’s progress. I also partnered with Creative Narrations (a non-profit multimedia agency in Oakland, CA) to develop a supplemental curriculum for grades 3 – 12 for U.S. and Thai schools.
I filmed "The Eyes of Thailand" for over two years. Soraida personally invited me to film significant milestones, most recently when Mosha and Motala, two elephant landmine survivors, received their prosthetic limbs in August 2009. Soraida, a woman with courage and conviction and unfortunately, countless threats to her life, has also entrusted me with her personal story through intimate interviews featured in the film.
The goal of "The Eyes of Thailand" is to educate and inspire viewers to protect the Asian Elephants through their actions both in the U.S. and in Thailand. Avoiding zoos with elephants, circuses and elephant attractions is the first step in ending the abuse and exportation of Asian Elephants. While other documentaries and television spots have addressed the plight of elephants worldwide, my film goes behind the walls of the FAE and allows the audience to look the injured elephants in the eye, witness two of them take their first steps on their prosthetic limbs, and meet Soraida as she strives daily to protect an endangered species from abuse, exportation and extinction. My ultimate hope for the film is to convey the added sense of urgency for people and organizations worldwide to pressure Thailand to change the laws in order to protect the dwindling number of Asian Elephants. If nothing is done, the species will become extinct within the next 50 years producing devastating effects on the environment, as well as the social and cultural structure of the country
