TheatreRUN's Story
Hello Dear Friends, Family and Arts supporters. I'm Adam Paolozza. I'm Artistic Director of TheatreRUN, an award winning independent theatre company based in Toronto, Canada. We create new plays and promote the growth of theatre through offering affordable workshops to professionals and amateurs. We also present internationally renowned artists to teach and perform with us. Sometimes, we like to make work in French. We have produced critically acclaimed commercially successful work (our show SPENT was a big hit and is playing off-off-Broadway in the Spring) and we tour internationally. We played a show in China this fall!
We believe that making theatre is important because theatre tells us stories about who we are. Theatre connects us to the past and gives us a glimpse towards the possiblilities of the future. It happens live, in the present. It brings people together. We think, in this day and age, that this is very important. We hope you feel the same way.
SO, WHAT DO HEAVY METAL, MIME AND DOSTOEVSKY HAVE IN COMMON?? ...They all come together in our new show, The Double!
We’re debuting this off-beat new work in February at the Factory Theatre in downtown Toronto. It's a musical adaptation of a classic novella by Dostoevsky called The Double. It's the story of a mild mannered, hard working guy, like you or me, who goes a little bit mad when he runs into a man who is, in every way, his double!
The show is a comedy...imagine a bunch of vaudeville performers who decided to get together and mix it up with Mime, Double Bass and Russian Lit...sort of like The Office meets Dostoevsky. We think it will make you laugh...and wince!
Once again, it's all happening at the Factory Theatre from February 3-19, 2012!
We are also very excited that this piece marks a new collaboration with Arif Mirabdolbaghi, the bass player from the award-winning Canadian metal band Protest The Hero. He’s dark, mysterious and plays a mean Double Bass...he’s also pretty cute...
What Your Help Means To Us!
We're a small company and we survive on a mixture of arts grants, ticket sales and our own blood, sweat & tears. Oh, and the support of friends...that's where YOU come in.
When we make a new show it's an investment: we put all of our passion and resources into getting it produced – sometimes we have to start small and hope it will grow. Many big shows (like Rent, for example) started off like that and got very big, employing many artists for many years. That's where your investment pays off: your donation will allow us to create a show that will continue to play for years to come... HOW, you ask?
RUNNING OUT OF TIME and THE GREATEST SHOW YOU NEVER HEARD OF...
It’s tough working on a shoestring budget. Usually we have to make shows faster than bigger theatres. This gives our work an air or urgency and excitement but it can also prevent us from going deeper into what we are creating. Sometimes potentially great shows are botched because we run out of time. And, once the show is ready, we need people to come and see it, right? Many a great show suffered a premature death because no one heard about it. That’s where a publicist comes in, an expensive but necessary part of the team. A publicist will also ensure that the show is covered by the press. This will get bums in seats as well as helping the future of the show.
Your Investment and How We’ll Use It
So, with your help we are looking to raise $3000 to offset our budget shortfall. Your donations will go towards:
• paying for an extra week of work
• paying the salary for 3 actors and 2 designers during this week
• paying for the rehearsal space for us to work in
• And finally it will help us afford to hire a top publicist so we can spread the word about the show
We’ve already invested our own money into the project and we have received funding from the Toronto Arts Council and the Ontario Arts Council. This means the project will happen whether we reach our funding goal or not. As they say, the show must go on. But if we do not reach our full funding goal we will still use whatever money we raise to fund as many extra days of rehearsal as we can, so the money will still go directly to the artists. Every little bit will help, I assure you.
We've assembled a team of some of the brightest, up-and-coming artists in Canadian theatre. Helping them work for another week may not seem like a lot but it is huge - it allows us the extra time to focus on providing the best possible experience for us and you, our audience.
What’s In It For You!
We are also offering special 'perks' for donating. See the details in the “Perks” section of this page...
Other Ways You Can Help
And if you really cannot donate at this time but believe in the project as we do, there are other ways you can help. You can:
• spread the word to your friends and invite them to donate
• come and see the show when it opens
• follow the progress of the show at www.theatrerun.wordpress.com
Sometimes just spreading the word can help in ways you cannot imagine! Thanks!
