After twenty years on the air, the clown-faced, Rat Pack era, late night talk show host Charlie da Clown struggles to stay relevant amidst the upheaval of the rapidly changing entertainment landscape of the 1980s.
SEASON ONE
SYNOPSIS
For twenty years, the CHARLIE DA CLOWN SHOW was the top
rated late-night talk show in the history of network television and Charlie
along with his faithful sidekick Sprinkles were TVs dynamic duo throughout the
sixties and seventies. As the
years wore on and his fellow Rat Packers retired from the biz, Charlie refused
to hang up the microphone and chose instead to fill the much-needed void left
by Sinatra and the gang and monopolize their booze, broads and bucks lifestyle.
Now in 1984 the show takes to the air for its twentieth
seasonbut times have changed and so has Charlies relevance in the
entertainment world. When once,
his show was frequented by Hugh Hefner, Muhammad Ali and the glamorous Sofia
Lauren, its now infested with the likes of Larry Flynt, Hulk Hogan, and some
chick named Boy George. While
Charlie cant make sense of why these neon colored hacks exist in his world,
hes soon forced to realize its him that no longer belongs.
As Charlie schemes to get back on top amidst power struggles
with his bandleader, double dealings with his producer, his stage manager
losing his grip on reality and his sidekick finally standing up for himself,
his beloved show crumbles around him and the host you love to hate, fights to
keep the throne he fought so hard to win in a world that has changed without
him.
This thirty-minute, character-based comedy could be best
described as Eastbound and Down meets The Muppet Show. You will laugh uncontrollably and at
times uncomfortably.
