Supporting a Courageous Friend
Carlos Ivn Degregori is a beloved
friend, internationally-renowned author, scholar, journalist, and public
intellectual. He is also known for his role as the storyteller in the
documentary film State of Fear which
traces two decades of internal conflict in Peru that claimed
70,000 lives (see excerpts above). Formerly the head of the School of Anthropology at San Marcos
University, director of the Institute of Peruvian Studies and visiting scholar
at several universities around the globe, Carlos Ivn is best known for his
work on political processes in Peru and his dedication to serving others though
education and advocacy for human rights and justice.
Carlos Ivn has published extensively on countless topics,
including ethnicity, social movements, and the Shining Path, which between 1980 and 1999, unleashed the most violent armed conflict in Peru's republican
history, claiming nearly 70,000 lives. In 2001, Carlos Ivn was appointed
by the Peruvian government to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC)
that investigated the crimes and human rights violations committed during that
conflict. Over the years Carlos Ivn has continued his search for truth and
reconciliation in Peru, on occasion at great risk to his own safety, and is an
unwavering example of the power of perseverance, diligence and compassion.
Two years ago, Carlos Ivn
was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, for which he has been undergoing
taxing treatments. During this period, many of Carlos Ivn's
colleagues and friends have provided solidarity, good wishes and other
forms of support to help him and his family through this
challenge. Cognizant of the difficulties that he is confronting at this
moment, we have set up a fund to assist Carlos Ivn and his family with costs
related to treatment. We also hope that a portion of these funds will go towards enabling the
publication of unreleased writings of his that have accumulated over the years.
Through his
work with the Peruvian Truth Commission, he empowered thousands of people
victimized and displaced by violence. As a member of the Commission and as a
scholar, he has been integral to revealing the injustices that have marked
Peruvian history, and that must be confronted in order to build a better
society for the future. Through his mentoring of thousands of students around the
world he has taught the power of learning, compassion, critical thinking and
activism. The film "State of Fear," during the production of which we came to know Carlos Ivn, was broadcast in 157 countries, and translated into 44 languages. Carlos Ivn, speaking directly to camera, told the compelling story of the Peruvian Truth Commission's discoveries to millions of people around the world.
Carlos Ivn is the breadwinner for his family. He needs the community he
has nourished through out his career to support him now. We (Pamela Yates, Peter Kinoy and Paco de Onis, filmmakers from Skylight Pictures, as well as Rebecca Lichtenfeld, who had the privilege of working with Carlos Ivn while on staff at the Social Science Research Council), have come together to take this initiative.

Our goal is to raise $10,000 for Carlos Ivn Degregori by April 4, 2011. The funds will be delivered by Rebecca to Carlos Ivn to cover medical and other bills and the costs of publication of research that he is in the process of
completing.

Carlos Ivn Degregori es un queridsimo
amigoautor, investigador, periodista e intelectual pblico conocido
internacionalmente. Tambin se le conoce por su rol de narrador en el
documental State of Fear, el cual recorre dos dcadas de conflicto interno en
el Per que cobro mas de 70,000 vidas (ver segmentos incluidos). Durante su
carrera, ha sido director de la Escuela de Antropologa en la Universidad San
Marcos, director del Instituto de Estudios Peruanos, y profesor visitante en
numerosas universidades a nivel mundial. Carlos Ivn, sin embargo, es quizs
mas conocido por su trabajo sobre los procesos polticos en el Per y su
dedicacin y servicio como educador y defensor de los derechos humanos y la
justicia.
Carlos Ivn ha publicado extensamente
sobre un sinnmero de temas, entre ellos la etnicidad, los movimientos
sociales, y tambin Sendero Luminoso, que entre 1980 y 1999 desat el conflicto
armado mas violento de la historia republicana del Per. En el 2001, Carlos Ivn
fue nombrado a la Comisin de Verdad y Reconciliacin (CVR) que investig los crmenes
y violaciones a los derechos humanos cometidas durante el conflicto interno.
Desde entonces, Carlos Ivn ha continuado su trabajo en busca de la verdad y la
reconciliacin en Per, a veces poniendo su propia seguridad en
riesgo. Carlos Ivn es un ejemplo inquebrantable del poder de la perseverancia,
la diligencia y la compasin.
Hace dos aos, Carlos
Ivn fue diagnosticado con cncer al pncreas y desde entonces se ha sometido a
arduos tratamientos. Durante este tiempo, muchos amigos y colegas de Carlos
Ivn le han brindado su solidaridad, sus buenos deseos, y otras expresiones de
apoyo a l y a su familia. Concientes de las dificultades que enfrenta, hemos
establecido un fondo para ayudar a Carlos Ivn y a su familia a cubrir los
costos relacionados a su tratamiento. Esperamos que estos tambin puedan apoyar
la publicacin de sus escritos inditos que se han acumulado a travs de los aos.
Con su trabajo con la CVR en el Per,
Carlos Ivn le ha dado voz a miles de personas desplazadas y victimizadas por
la violencia. Como miembro de la Comisin y como acadmico, ha jugado un panel
protagnico en hacer visibles las injusticias que han marcado la historia
peruana, las cuales tienen que ser encaradas para poder construir una sociedad
y un futuro mejor. A travs de su labor docente, le ha enseado el poder del aprendizaje, la compasin, el pensamiento crtico y el
activismo a miles de estudiantes en distintas partes de mundo. El documental
State of Fear, que fue como conocimos a Carlos Ivn inicialmente, fue
exhibido en 157 pases y traducido a 44 idiomas. Carlos Ivn, hablando
directamente a la cmara, le cont las atrocidades documentadas por la CVR al
mundo entero.
Carlos Ivn es el sostn econmico de su familia. En este difcil
momento, necesita el apoyo de la comunidad al cual l le ha entregado tanto a
travs de su carrera. Nosotros (Pamela Yates, Peter Kinoy y Paco de Onis,
cineastas de Skylight Pictures, junto con Rebecca Lichtenfeld quien tuvo el
privilegio de trabajar con l en Social Science Research Council) nos hemos
juntado para impulsar esta iniciativa.
