Short Synopsis - Is this life mine?
Rachel – terminally ill - faces no hope for treatment. Driven to control her own destiny she travels with her stoic father George to Zurich, Switzerland in order to commit physician assisted suicide. But as she engages the experience of her last day, it is clear that George is not yet ready to let her go.
The Story and Why It's Important
Terminal - our newest short film - explores euthanasia travel, a phenomenon that many people aren't familiar with. At present, Canadians have no legal option domestically to receive humane assistance in ending their own life. Facing terminal and debilitating disease, people from around the world have chosen to fly to Switzerland, to get help ending their lives.
Our story follows George, the stoic father of Rachel, who accompanies her on their final flight to Switzerland. While Rachel is set on making the most of this last day - engaging every small moment - George is hoping that she will change her mind about ending her life.
Why is this film important? Because it's time to have the discussion about euthanasia and physician-assisted suicides. In Canada, a recent report by an expert panel of the Royal Society of Canada has proposed that it is time for euthanasia and assisted-suicide be removed from the Criminal Code and made available as an option to Canadians (http://www.cbc.ca/). At current, undertaking this process internationally has led to at best obfuscated legal ramifications and leaves anyone accompanying loved ones to their death at least exposed to legal action upon return to their home countries. Beyond that, should a person have to leave the comfort of their family and home to receive assistance? When does quality of life become more important than quantity of life? Is there a better way to help people live their final days in dignity? The time for this discussion is now.
Filmed almost entirely in Zurich, the film is directed by Zurich-native Samuel Flückiger, written by Darragh McDonald, and produced by Mike MacMillan (Lithium Studios Productions) and Jordan Gross (Dark Hope Ent.). Our talented crew will be compromised of filmmakers from both Canada and Switzerland and our ACTRA Canadian cast will be announced shortly.
