At a local comic book convention MARCUS, MORI and LES, three teenage friends, meet the arrogant TRIXIE who casually buys an expensive comic book and then presents it to them. It is a lure for them to join her Lazer Tag team. They accept and Trixie, a champion at the game, begins their training.
An orphan and runaway, Marcus, takes a job at an arcade and becomes friends with the owner, JOE, a bitter war scared cripple. Joe takes a liking to Marcus and offers to pay for Marcus’ training as an arcade technician if he shows he has the courage and skill to win the statewide Lazer Tag trophy. It is a challenge Marcus readily accepts.
During a Game Convention, Trixie and her team meet PITBULL and MAD COW the ruthless heads of their own team. Thus begins a rivalry for the Grand Trophy. She and Marcus strengthen their team and feelings between the two grow beyond friendship.
Trixie visits Marcus at the arcade. She meets Joe who is revealed as Trixie’s father. Joe asks for forgiveness for not coming home to her. His fear he would not be accepted, due to his disfigurement, drove him into a deep depression. Trixie cannot accept his justifications and runs from the arcade in tears. At her home she confronts the evil COUNT OMAR, who is actually her estranged grandfather. He tells her that he had condemned his son for marrying Trixies neurotic mother but upon his sons death he has provided for Trixie and her mother but from a distance. Overwhelmed by evidence, Trixie accepts what she is told and brings her grandfather to the arcade to reunite him with his dead son. The big game is just days away and Trixie hasn’t the strength to lead. Even the reunion of her parents cannot comfort her. But their treatments, at Omars expense, are bringing them to mental and physical health.
In a surprise move, Marcus joins Pitbull’s team and Trixie becomes so enraged she is determined to win. Her team fights an incredible battle and takes the trophy. After the tournament she confronts Marcus and he confesses he pretended to turn traitor to inspire her to win. Her world had fallen apart and she needed a cause to push her to victory. It was Trixie’s father who had coached Marcus on the wisdom of this strategy and it paid off in restoring Trixie’s emotional strength.
