Do you see how those Haitians are learning to plant their own garden? This isn’t just some group looking to give handouts to Haitians. We are providing a lasting education to the victims of the earthquake in Leogane, and you can help start one of these gardens!
Having been around Haitians for two years in Orlando, I was touched deeply when the earthquake happened. To amplify my feelings, a few weeks later a friend called me to say his father had died in the earthquake and my friend had no way of getting back to attend the funeral. I knew I had to do whatever I could to go to Haiti and help.
More than 100 BYU students have formed Sustain Haiti, a group dedicated to helping the victims in Haiti. Led by Warner Woodworth – founder of HELP International and Humanitarian Action Research Team – we are graduate and undergraduate students (some speak French or Haitian Creole and some are native citizens of Haiti ) looking to make a difference to those affected by the earthquake in Leogane.
Our Goals:
1) Provide hands-on education in square-foot gardening.
2) Provide sanitation/hygiene education.
3) Work with and through Haitian micro-finance institutions to identify micro-enterprise.
4) Provide clean water technology.
Each volunteer must raise $2000, which includes airfare, living arrangements, and, most importantly, funds for the projects.
