Our Story

Hi, I'm Inbaraj, the team leader of Social Ideas. For the past 1 year, we have been planning to setup a social enterprise to promote the sustainable development of underprivileged (rural & urban-poor) communities in Malaysia, especially on access to basic amenities, healthcare, child education, the environment and socio-economic agendas through creative ideas & socially-conscious technologies. SOCIALIDEAS will be set up to achieve two parallel missions; sustainable community development and the promotion of socially-conscious business activities. This is to ensure that the enterprise will be able to remain sustainable and not depend on donations to run its future operations.

Backed by a team of socially-conscious professionals from diverse backgrounds with various skills & expertise, SOCIALIDEAS aims to be the leader in sustainable community development in this country. This group also aims to break new grounds in developing socially-conscious “green” technologies and implementing them on the field to tackle the many issues they may face on both the social and business fronts.

As a social enterprise, we are fully committed to utilize all profits generated through our business activities to further develop our human resource and fund the social mission.

The Impact

Although Malaysia is a fast developing nation, there is a huge economic gap between the wealthy, middle class and extremely poor rural communities. On one front, the government is developing many industries, but at the same time, many rural/native communities are left behind without even basic amenities as mentioned above. We believe that with our expertise and adequate funding, we will be able to uplift the socio-economic standards of these underprivileged communities.

Taken from our initial proposal which we presented to some potential investors:

OBJECTIVES

Social Mission - Sustainable Community Development (Rural & Urban Poor)

1.       Facilitate sustainable socio-economic development for underprivileged communities in Malaysia.

2.       Develop a pool of human resource with capability in undertaking SCD programmes.

3.       Create opportunities for corporate and private sponsors to get directly involved in SCD programmes.

Commercial Mission - Socially-Conscious Business Development

1.       Establish socially-conscious business activities to generate revenue for the organization.

2.       Initiate community-based business ventures to generate revenue, develop the local economy of underprivileged communities and create job opportunities for its members.

ACTION PLAN

Social Mission - Sustainable Community Development (SCD)

1.       Facilitate sustainable socio-economic development for underprivileged communities in Malaysia.

·         RECON - Identify underprivileged communities that urgently need assistance in issues related to basic amenities, healthcare, child education, the environment and socio-economy through field agents or volunteers. Conduct detailed study on the field and document the needs as every community will have different needs. This process will require multiple visits to the selected communities.

·         RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT (R&D) - Perform R&D to discover sustainable solutions and technologies to solve the issues identified in the RECON process or apply solutions that have been already developed in previous project areas.

·         FUNDRAISING - Initiate fundraising programmes through website, social media and also directly approach corporate sponsors to fund the development projects.

·         IMPLEMENTATION - Implement the desired solutions with cooperation and active involvement from the local community, relevant authorities and experts.

·         TRAINING - Develop local human resource and empower them to manage & maintain the solutions in a sustainable manner.

·         ASSESSMENT - Perform evaluation on the effectiveness and sustainability of the completed projects.

·         REPLICATION - Replicate the successful solutions in other communities with similar needs.

2.       Develop a pool of human resource with capability in undertaking SCD programmes.

·         Recruit fulltime SCD project coordinators & assistants and provide the necessary training.

·         Create short-term internship programme for tertiary students to gain experience in SCD work.

·         Create a volunteer support group to assist with SCD projects and awareness programmes. Includes encouraging tertiary students to start-up social enterprise clubs in their schools.

·         Network with other social entrepreneurs, social organizations and people who are interested in order to share knowledge and resources through monthly workshops.

3.       Create opportunities for corporate/private sponsors to get directly involved in SCD programmes.

·         Publish online reports on on-going SCD projects and list down specific sponsorship opportunities.

·         Provide online payment facilities for sponsors to easily contribute.

Commercial Mission - Socially-Conscious Business Development

1.       Establish socially-conscious business activities to generate revenue for the organization. Some of the suggested business activities:

·         CSR Consultancy & Training

                                       i.     Assist business organizations to implement in-house CSR programs using their own workforce and spend their CSR funds efficiently.

ii.     Organize training programmes on CSR and “social enterprise”.

·         Social Agenda Web TV

                                       i.     Launch a Web TV to promote social ideas and organizations.

ii.     Produce documentaries on in-house social projects and other social enterprises & organizations in Malaysia in order to spread their work to the public.

                                    iii.     Generate ad revenue.

2.       Initiate community-based business ventures to generate revenue, develop the local economy of underprivileged communities and create job opportunities for its members.

·         Homestay Eco-Tourism

·         Sustainable Farming

·         Local Logistics Service

What We Need & What You Get

Well basically, we need about USD100,000 to setup this social enterprise with an office, equipment and fulltime staff, and to immediately kick off some projects (travel expense, gear). IF we are unable to reach that amount, we will start small and expand slowly with any amount of funding received. We're fully committed towards this idea. Since this will not be a profit making venture, we might not be able to give back really attractive perks, but we will try our best to get you involved in all our activities :-)

Other Ways You Can Help

If you can't contribute money, it's ok. You can always help us spread the word! We believe in the power of social media :-)
