Our Story
Sightly Imperfect is a comedy about Mason Opper, recently divorced and ready to find the love he never had in his marriage. He works from home, meets dates though matchmaking websites, and rarely sees the sun. He needs advice and guidance; unfortunately, the best advice he can get is from his buddies John and Sam, and it does him more harm than good. Socially awkward and out of practice, Mason must learn to follow his own advice, to be himself, and to go outside, in order to find the love he is looking for. Inspired by films such as Swingers, Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Slightly Imperfect will be outrageous in tone, grounded in great performances, and hilarious.
The filmmakers behind Slightly Imperfect are on almost as perilous a journey as Mason. We are graduate students at Chapman University's Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, earning our respective Master of Fine Arts degrees, this film being our thesis master work. Aside from hoping to win the lottery, we count on our hard work, meticulous planning, and generous donors like you to help us accomplish our goal of bringing Slightly Imperfect to life.
Impact
Filmmaking is at the same time difficult and fun. The difficulties are what make it fun, which is why our team chose to come to grad school and further push ourselves to be the best we could be. Any and all contributions you can make to our project will help us overcome those difficulties, without taking the fun away. Our project is about 75% funded, by generous support from our school, equipment donations, and most importantly, the labor of our crew and cast, none of whom are getting paid. Your help will push us over the finish line.
Check back for updates, which will be up regularly, to get behind the scenes tidbits, including actor's workshops, location scouts, and more. The DVD/BD copies of the film that we offer in our higher perks will include this footage and more in the special features. The more you can give, the more we try to give back to you: Not just a movie poster, but a poster lovingly signed by the cast and key crew; not just an invitation to the screening in March, but dinner for you and a guest; not just a car wash, but a car wash in a bikini (or ninja outfit). You're not just a donor; by making this project possible, you're a filmmaker, and like we said, filmmaking should be fun.
Where It Goes
We've had great luck securing locations, casting, catering, and purchasing film and processing, at reasonable costs, but the fact is that there are still costs, and your donations go to these businesses and vendors, helping to realize the world of the film without sacrificing quality. Our goal is to tell a great story, make a quality film, and of course, make people laugh.
Just a few examples of where your patronage will go:
$2,700 for 35mm film and processing (we love film).
$1,800 for nine days of catering, not including craft services (we love feeding people).
$3,000 for location fees, which covers all seven locations in the film, and comes at a substantial discount from the location owners (we love generous business owners).
Remember, every little bit helps: 200 people donating $50 would get us to our goal and beyond, as would 400 people donating $25, or 1,000 people donating $10. You gotta love Indie GoGo and the internet for making those numbers not sound astronomical or out of reach. Every big bit helps, too, so don't forget about the perks for donating more; after all, what would we do with all the signed posters and premiere screening invitations? We believe so strongly in the importance of any sized contribution that the first donor to put us over our goal, even if it's with the smallest of amounts, will receive a Slightly Imperfect T-Shirt, in addition to everything included with your donation level.
Other Ways To Help
The funds gathered will be used to feed the hard-working cast and crew, secure locations, purchase film and processing, and in the overall production and post-production phases of Slightly Imperfect. The crew would gladly also welcome any donations you are willing to give such as craft services (snacks), truck rentals, and equipment. If you're local to the area and would like to volunteer your time and effort in the pre-production or production phases of the film, that would also be welcomed. If you are a musician and want to help us write, record, and assemble a kick-ass soundtrack for the film, we'd love to hear from you. And of course, whether you can donate anything or not, by spreading the word about Slightly Imperfect, either through the tools provided by Indie GoGo, or on your own, you will be helping us immensely.
