Have you ever had a finger cut off? Been dumped over the phone with the words “I’m sleeping with someone else”? Been forced to undergo the excruciating agony of dreary monotony at your place of work or residence? Had the shit shocked out of you?
I’m sure we can all answer these questions with an affirmative in some way. For example, I’ve been shocked numerous times, by my girlfriend. Life is complicated.
For Adam, Bartholomew, and Philip Deadhouse-Martin, the complications are as varied as their occupations.
Adam is a psychiatric patient. A previous life of wild indifference to society has translated to a present of intensely regimented days and nights. His unwilling participation with an experiment in behavior modification will lead to a point of change for his psyche.
Bartholomew is Adam’s guard. Day in and day out he keeps the schedule set out for both him and the patient. Despite the drudgery of his job Bartholomew still fosters the kernel of a dream.
Philip believes that he’s on top of his game. That the world he has created through strict control of himself and those around him is finally yielding results. Those results may include the unexpected.
Each man is faced with a moment of clarity, where the change in one ricochets off of the other. Life is a collection of chaotic and ordered changes.
