Our Story
At Nicus Spoon we are dedicated to producing socially relevant theatrical works that present new ideas, challenge definitions, and touch the heart in an unexpected way. We celebrate the collaborative spirit in developing productions that are pertinent for todays global and rapidly changing world. NYC is full of people from vastly different backgrounds, on the move and unheard. We give voice to those who are very much a part of our world, but whose stories often go untold. We seek to involve these diverse voices in our play selection, in our artistic, production and volunteer staffs, and in our audience.
We request $3,000 in funds to provide two signed performances of our January 2012 childrens show, a re-envisioned Snow White & Rose Red for deaf children. As our target audience is 3 year olds to 13 year olds, in particular the younger ones do not have a firm foundation in reading and cannot use closed captioning. These two performances will be only for deaf children so ASL interpreting is a real need.
The Impact
When we work with adults our ASL presentations are somewhat of a choice, with small children it is a necessity.
Our ticketing is one of the lowest in Manhattan at $6 per child- most shows are charging $10. We often host school groups as well and maintain our low prices, as well as letting teachers and chaperones attend for free. There is absolutely no alternative for deaf youngsters and hearing ones do not fare any better as more and more educational and arts programs are cut - even in preschools and community centers. There is nobody to fill this need.
What We Need & What You Get

2 interpreters for 2 shows each
