Burnt Thicket Theatre in partnership with Raise Their Voice presents The 2012 Tour
A six-month tour across North America, engaging thousands in this compelling story of human trafficking.
Haunted by anguished voices, a lawyer poses as a john to build a legal case against a brothel trafficking girls into Bangkok. Can Jason win the trust of a young prostitute known only as Number 18 and convince her to risk her life to testify for the sake of justice?
In February and March 2011, SHE HAS A NAME premiered in Calgary and Red Deer to sold-out audiences and critical acclaim. Burnt Thicket Theatre and Raise Their Voice are now partnering to take this life-changing play to cities across North America in 2012.
The $10,000 we raise here, in addition to our goal of $50,000 through
Ride for Refuge will give us the seed money to contract our
actors and pay our
production staffin other words, to ensure that we have the
people we need to make this tour a reality. We'll be fundraising for other elements over the next year, but without these artists, we don't have a tour. This initial $60,000 will guarantee that the artists will be honored with a living wage for the time, talent, and passion that they put into this tour.
You can help us take the first steps toward making this tour a reality!

"Calgary's SHE HAS A NAME a 'heart-wrenching' hit, powerful drama... Denise Wong is simply amazing... The subject matter makes SHE HAS A NAME a difficult experience but the love and care that has gone into this production makes it a rewarding one. FOUR STARS"
Louis B. Hobson, Calgary Sun
"Human trafficking play gets heart behind horror... it is the portrayal by Denise Wong of someone embodying childlike innocence enslaved by fear that galvanizes the production, and gives it urgency and emotional depth."
Bob Clark, Calgary Herald (read full review)

The trafficking of children is a global reality. Experts estimate that 1.2 million children are forced into some aspect of the sex trade worldwide. While the play focuses on an imagined case in Asia where trafficking is more widespread, experts estimate that there are some 300,000 children in the US who are currently working in the sex trade.
