Paloma, a shy young woman who has lived with her grandmother since the death of her mother and twin sister in a terrible fire, has led a sheltered life. Her peaceful life is shattered when a thief breaks in and steals her sister’s ibeji. Paloma is tortured by terrifying visions once the statue that houses her sister’s soul is torn away from her.

Bertrand Bezier’s is East London businessman transplanted to East Harlem. Lately his enemies are dying without a trace of foul play. He doesn’t know the particulars. He doesn’t want to. But he does know that ever since hiring Caesar Ramirez as his lawyer things have been going his way.

Caesar is ambitious. He doesn’t want to be a storefront immigration lawyer. He has grander plans. Caesar wants to be a high rolling attorney for one of East Harlem’s most notorious gangsters. To land this plum position he must dispose of the man who holds the job. Caesar visits a Palero, famous for being able to get results. The black magician who for a price perverts his faith to do evil, demands that Caesar bring him the soul of his dead daughter. The soul of a twin is more powerful than any other. Caesar steals the ibeji. Once Caesar has the job he wants he finds that, like a gambling addict, he wants more. Caesar’s enemies fall one by one, killed by his dead daughter who acts as the Palero’s puppet. But each time the stakes grow higher.

Bad guys are dropping dead for no apparent reason. No signs of criminal activity whatsoever. But they aren’t just random bad guys. All of the deaths benefit the notorious gangster, Bertrand Bezier. Detective Joe Rio doesn’t believe in coincidence. But he can’t seem to find any evidence that would prove the deaths were not accidents, until he discovers that each of the dead men have identical charms in their pockets. As Rio follows the trail of the charms, he discovers evidence, that as unlikely as it seems, points to a shy young woman as the murderer. As Rio follows the clues he finds himself falling deeper and deeper into a macabre world he doesn’t understand.

Paloma is afraid. She sees visions of her twin doing horrible things – unspeakable things. And as hard as she tries she can’t understand why pieces of her memory are missing. As the Palero’s grip on her sister grows tighter, Paloma understands that it is no longer enough to be a good person. She finds within herself the strength to fight a supreme evil who proves to be a formidable foe.
