Our Story
The current owner of Yorktown Memorial Hospital bought the building almost 3 years ago and began cleaning it up, furnishing the building, repairing broken windows (But keeping broken appearance) and started to let people come in to investigate the building on ghost hunts. The city had not said anything to the owner for 3 years, no one has ever been hurt in the building during this time, but as of Sep 8th, the city conducted a surprise inspection and closed down the hospital immediately citing 3 code violations, these include Not having a fire alarm system, the roof needs to be repaired, and the city wants the owner to fix all the bathrooms. The owner Phil Ross estimates that the cost to fix all these violations is near $100,000 and the city has shut the building down until it's repaired. The city administrator has made comments that he would like to see the building torn down and that this building is an eyesore. The city of Yorktown is a small town in South Central Texas, it is about 2 hours away from San Antonio, and there is no development around the city. This building has been the major source (if not only source) of tourism to this town for the last 3 years, and it's closure affects everything from the local motel across the street to the restaurants in town.
The Impact
Without the your assistance, this great building will remain closed to the public. Most of the town has either had someone born in this hospital or a family member or friend pass away in it. It has touched the lives of almost everyone in the city. A fraternal order of nuns raised money in 1950 to build this building, and it stayed in operation until the late 1980s when it ultimately closed down. It has sat vacant, being used for storage by 2 previous owners before Mr. Ross purchased it, cleaned it up and offered tours through the facility. Many paranormal investigations by professional teams have toured through the location, and each time great evidence has been collected. Brian Harnois and Britt Griffith from Ghost Hunters have both been to this location.
What We Need & What You Get
What we need is for people to donate funds to help fix the roof, bathrooms, and add a fire alarm system and suppression system. Really great people in town have already committed to do the work free of charge as long as the owner can buy the materials needed.
