My Story
Remember when...Elizabeths personality changed after she was in the motorcycle accident....when Jessica blacklisted Robin Wilson from joining the Pi Beta Alphas because she was overweight...and when Bruce untied Jessicas bathing suit top in the pool?
If you were a child/young teen and avid reader in the eighties and nineties, you have the images of the beautiful, blond, blue-eyed, perfect sized-6 Wakefield twins of the Sweet Valley High book series burned into your memory.
I am embarking on a book to serve as a companion to the Sweet Valley High books. Through humor, creative writing, and nostalgia, I will be writing a companion book to the beloved series.
In 2007, I launched the blog The Dairi Burger on a whim. As a pre-teen I devoured the entire Sweet Valley High series. Even as a child, I found them overwrought and campy. In the blog, I chronicled my thoughts and reactions. as I reread them as an adult. Sure, they were badly written. But reading them in my adult feminist critical lens, I saw themes and messages in the books that made me think about its impact on my psyche and that of young girls.Others saw it too. The blog, thanks to promotion from other sites and word of mouth, amassed about 10,000 hits per week. Through the comments and communication with my readers, I built a community of smart, well-read women (and yes, some men) who were all connected by their shared love for the books and the shared laughter of how bad they were.In 2009, I had completed recapping the original 100 books in the series. I felt like it was a natural time to end, and I had said all I needed to with the blog. Last year, the long-awaited new Sweet Valley High book, Sweet Valley Confidential, was released. Diablo Cody, screenwriter of the hip, announced she was working on a draft of a Sweet Valley High script. The power of Sweet Valley High, whether we like it or not, still captivates us. Even in the two years since I officially stopped updating the blog, I have still kept in communication with those I have formed relationships with through my shared love of Sweet Valley High.
I can read all your recaps on the blog. Why are you publishing a book?
I hope to attract many readers who have not read my blog. There is a lot of material on the blog, and reading it in book form may be more enjoyable. Plus, I plan to add additional, new material including:
*New, never before published recaps of the last 30 books in the series *A Sweet Valley High glossary, covering all the places, people, and ridiculous plotlines and themes *New essays reflecting on the series.
What I Need & What You Get
Since I plan on self-publishing, aside from actually writing this thing, I'll likely hire an editor and someone to help me format everything. I also plan to do some traveling to promote the book.
Other Ways You Can Help
Tell your friends! Buy a copy when it is released! If you have a blog or are a freelance writer, please consider featuring this project. All publicity is good publicity.
Follow my updates on Twitter, Facebook and on The Dairi Burger!
