Now the first round is finished. I thank all the people who bought a SUMPOD.

I am waiting on some parts and expect the first machines to ship within the estimated lead time. I will contact when each SUMPOD is ready for dispatch.

Thanks again for your support

Richard

UPDATE 24/07/2011

The newly designed website is live at SUMPOD.COM. It has a forum for all and news posts.

UPDATE 08/07/2011

I have now started a website at SUMPOD.COM. Over the next week I will be adding videos, a blog and a forum.

What is SUMPOD?

My aim in designing the SUMPOD was to produce a product which not only makes the technology affordable and hence accessible but has the safety of the user at the forefront. That aim has been met with the SUMPOD. You may ask why a home 3d printer is necessary. My view is that like the inkjet printer which turned a lot of people into photographers and desktop publishers, a 3d printer will reignite our need to invent, design and construct with the end result being a rebirth of manufacturing. Anyone of any age will have the ability to have an idea and see it through from conception to manufacture. Home manufacture. It could also reduce the amount of waste by giving the user the ability to fix broken plastic parts, by designing and printing replacements.

It is not necessary to design objects as there are multitudes of designs available for free on-line which can be downloaded and printed using the available software.

BUILD QUALITY

The units are built using precision cut CNC parts using 18mm MDF, for strength, with axis which run on quality linear bearings and are driven by quality steel reinforced belts and trapezoidal spindles for smooth motion. The motors are high torque Nema 17s which are the best compromise between size, weight and power.

The extruder is based on the tried and tested wade extruder with an aluminium block hot end.

The machines will have a build area of 150mm by 150mm by 100mm with an overall size of 280*350*280.

There is a lcd display which is used to display temperature and will allow future developments such as a SD card standalone functionality.

All these components and design choices ensure that the machine will be long lasting, accurate and safe.

ACCESSORIES

A Dremel attachment for PCBs and light routing, such as lithopanes, is to be included with the kit.

PARTICIPATION

Your participation will ensure that you are one of the first to have a SUMPOD. Complete instruction on the assembly and use of the machine will be provided along with the access to a forum and site which will be unveiled at the time of the first shipments.

The SUMPODs will be made and dispatched in the order of the contributions received. The time from contribution to shipping will be between six to eight weeks.

There are THREE levels of participation:

$400+p&p :A MDF KIT excluding electronics but including motors.

$500+ p&p  :A MDF KIT including all electronics( these are of medium complexity
but use through hole components).

$600 + p&p :A MDF KIT with fully soldered electronics ready to use.

The MDF is supplied in the natural colour. This can be left as is or can be sealed and painted to reflect your individuality.

Postage costs :

You will be sent a Paypal request for the postage costs just before shipping. Please do not add these costs to the contribution. Any problem please send a message before you contribute.

Rest of World: $120
United Kingdom: $60
Pick up In Person in UK: Free ( to be arranged when order is complete)

Why IndieGoGO?

IndieGoGO contributors will not only be the first to have an affordable but quality 3D printer but will help me see the demand for such a product.

I have been asked what if the goal is not reached. The goal will allow me to take a small profit from each machine, by bulk buying but I have made sure that the price quoted is one that would ensure a machine to all participants regardless of goal. It was never my intention to make a massive profit from each machine but with success will bring a small profit ensuring that I strive for a quality product.

Why contribute?

I will be properly releasing more information to make you want to contribute in the next weeks in the form of videos, photographs and a website with blog.
At the moment this is a small project but in time I hope with your contribution and faith in the design and vision I that it expands to reach it main goal. This being to make it possible for everyone to have a 3d printer in their home, business or school.

FUTURE

There are two accessories that are to be developed in the coming months.

Dual Extruder
The electronics, which are supplied in the relevant kits, already make possible the use of an extra extruder. Two extruders give the user the possibility of using dual colours or newly developed water soluble plastics. Making possible a greater range of designs.

Drag Knife
This is used for the cutting of card and vinyl. For example when making greeting cards.
