Roots and River Productions is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. Contributions for the purposes of Roots and River Productions must be made payable to Fractured Atlas and are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.

Our Story

Roots and River Productions grew from the small seed of an idea. Artistic Director Azure D. Osborne-Lee moved to New York City and experienced firsthand how difficult it can be for an emerging artist, especially an artist of color, to make headway in the theatre. And so, out of a desire to foster artistic community for queer artists of color, Roots and River Productions was born.

Roots and River's mission is to produce creative work grounded in the community. The company is an artistic home for artists of color residing in the New York City metropolitan area. Roots and River serves as an incubator for new work, a site of artistic exploration, and an agency for community outreach.

The company's primary programming consists of the Roots and River Emerging Artist Mentorship Program and a portable, sustainable model for creating new work, simply called the Voicebox Workshops. Roots and River Productions has a particular interest in supporting the work of emerging interdisciplinary and performing artists. In 2012 Roots and River will kick off an artist residency program.

The Impact

Roots and River's team has been hard at work since the beginning of the year producing the Voicebox Writing Workshop series internationally and setting up a mentorship program for emerging black queer artists in Brooklyn, New York, which will launch this fall. We have a vision and the drive, but we need your help to keep us going!

What We Need & What You Get

Making work in the big city isn't cheap! Our goal is to raise at least $3000 for the 2011/2012 Roots and River Emerging Artist Mentorship Program. This will cover stipends for our mentors as well as the cost of workshops for our mentees. Additionally, your contributions will help defray other program costs such as rehearsal, meeting, or studio space rental and transportation fees.

Other Ways You Can Help

Roots and River accepts donations in all forms. If you have goods, services, or supplies that you would like to contribute, then we would be happy to receive them. Examples include paper, envelopes, photocopying privileges, and studio and/or rehearsal space. Every little bit counts and is much appreciated!
