Our Story
Rear Entry is based on the improv show of the same name created by Derek Bedry and Brendan James Boyd in fall 2010. The entirely improvised adult show was often themed around sex stories submitted by the audience that would then be translated into a 40 minute story depicted with puppets only. The success of the show ,the down-right gut-busting comedy that emerged and the intense real-life themes inspired Brendan James Boyd (co-creator & performer) to translate many of the scenes and topics explored within the show into a eight part web series and short film.

The key to the series was to not write "comedy". In fact Brendan went about compiling true personal stories from a variety of acquaintances and sources and set about writing a real human drama instead. The comedy comes from replacing one of the characters (written as a human with human actions and motivations) with a fuzzy cute puppet. The puppet is never referred to as a puppet, there are no explosions or puppet whackyness, and the other characters acknowledge the puppet as if it were human. The result of this switch is a degree of separation that makes familiar emotional stories extremely funny, downright bizarre and very entertaining...but we'll let you be the judge of that!
Rear Entry (the series) follows the story of Neeno, a male furry green monster puppet in a long term same-sex relationship who is starting to question his sexuality. An affair with a female co-worker, fear of losing his job and his partners increasingly destructive party habits complicate matters as this young monster tries to decide what exactly he wants from his life. Exploring issues such as sexual identity, relationships and growing up, Rear Entry is a comical but honest look at a modern day young persons struggle to find his role in this complicated world.
Although it will be released as an online series (approx 5-7 minutes per episode) the episodes will also be compiled in to a short film (with additional content) for film festival distribution.
Filming is scheduled to take place in early September 2011.

What We Need & What You Get
Much of our own money and countless hours of volunteer work will go in to making this project a reality. A great deal of work has gone in to getting this project off the ground already, but we simply cannot afford to entirely fund the project ourselves. So we need your help to make this series as incredible as it has potential to be.
It is crucial that this project have a strong story, look professional and SOUND good. We are off to a good start...we have a good script and talented cast and crew, a great camera to shoot it with..... now all we need is sound equipment.
There are some unique sound related challenges when working with puppets, and we will need to capture high quality sound for both the performers on camera and off. We have priced out an extremely low-budget sound kit (recording device, boom pole, microphone, chords and accessories) for just over $1000.00, and that is primarily where your funding will go.
The other portion of our funds will be going towards the materials for construction of the 2 versions of our principle puppet character Neeno, who will be designed and constructed by creator and puppeteer Brendan James Boyd. Over 60 hours of volunteer work will go in to the construction of these characters.
This is not the first project of ours, nor will it be the last. The equipment and materials purchased with your contributions will have an impact far withstanding this series. The sound equipment is an important tool that will help us with MANY future projects, both for puppet related projects and other shorts and film projects. So you are not just supporting our series, but many more creative projects from the cast and crew we work with regularly.
Also, the puppets constructed for this production will have a long, continued life in the live version of the show, Rear Entry: The improvised Puppet Show, which is scheduled to start it's new season this fall.
Additional funding (if we beat our goal or receive sponsorships or
additional funding outside this campaign) will be solely put towards
productions costs..... AND if we beat our goal, we'll definitely buy the
cast and crew pizza.
The Impact
First of all, the result of this project will be a well written, professional looking and sounding quality comedy web series (written by some very funny people) that you and thousands of others can watch and enjoy!Secondly, almost everyone involve is the picturesque starving artists, working "normal" jobs and taking odd-jobs here and there just to pay the bills. That's just the reality of being a creative person in today's society. By supporting our series you are supporting the endeavors of multiple young emerging artists who otherwise could not afford to take on such a project. Projects like these are extremely beneficial and important to the practice of young artists, and the exposure with release of content online and at film festival can be a crucial part in furthering these talented peoples careers. Everyone involved will be putting countless hours of hard work and effort in to making this series great, and the result and finished project will be something they can be proud of, and most importantly something for you (and thousands of others) to watch and enjoy!
